In this research, we conducted a comparative study on eight ethnic enclaves formed by foreign residents of five nationalities (China, Korea, Philippines, Brazil and Turkey). These enclaves were mapped with the same legend using the microdata of foreign residents from the 2015 census, and several enclave-related data were tabulated in a comparative manner. We also used the results of participant observations and interview surveys. Based on the obtained findings, we examined the possibility of applying existing explanatory frameworks, specifically spatial assimilation and heterolocalism, to the ethnic enclaves of contemporary Japan. Consequently, we concluded that the former is applicable only to the enclaves of Korean oldcomers, while the latter is applicable to those of many newcomers.

Foreign residents have increased in Japan and the areas with concentrated population of non-Japanese residents have been formed. Observing the ethnic conflict in multiethnic nations, Japanese society may also face aggravated ethnic conflict in the near future. The purpose of this study is to examine the cases of ethnic conflict in foreign countries on the basis of fieldworks and to search for appropriate means to alleviate the ethnic conflict that might occur in Japan.

The type and degree of contributions made by foreigners in Japan, a country that has started to show population decline, vary with their nationality and status-of-residence, and regional differences in this regard are not small. Since foreignersare engaged in a variety of occupations, such contributions in contemporary Japan are not necessarily conspicuous. The fertility of foreign women and women within international marriages is nearly equal to, or even lower than, that of Japanese women. The adoption of reliable support measures for foreigners by some of the local municipalities deserves our attention, while the social integration policies of the national government are insufficient and should be improved.

In this study, ethnicities were elucidated by using a geographical technique referred to as "analysis of daily-life activity space" to show the differences in daily-life activity spaces arising from the attributes of the members of ethnic groups and the restrictions which give rise to the differences. At the same time, the various measures and services carried out by governments and citizens organizations were considered in the aspect of, particularly, the conveyance of information to residents of foreign nationalities, and workshops were held in coordination with government-related organizations in order to provide occasions to rebuild channels of information conveyance which include residents of foreign nationalities.
