    ディケンズの伝達動詞の使用について，特に直接話法に限定して考察した．18世紀のイギリス作家に比べると伝達動詞は多様であるが，19世紀の同時代作家と比較するとそれほど違いがあるわけではない．ディケンズの伝達動詞を特徴づけているのは，それ自体が発話を表さない動詞であるto fawn, to frown, to sneerなどを伝達動詞として使用していることである．

    ディケンズの作品において特徴的な伝達動詞を３つ取り上げ，18世紀・19世紀テキストバンク，COHA(Corpus of Historical American English)，BNC(British National Corpus)を利用して，他の作家と比較した．ディケンズの作品では18世紀，19世紀の他の作家と比較すると，本来は伝達動詞ではない表情や態度を表す動詞を伝達動詞として使用していることが分かった．
