The purpose of this study is, firstly, to find out what kind of suffering has caused lepers to despair, and, secondly, to better understand their sufferings by realising that each of us shares more or less the same suffering as theirs, as long as we live. This should make us realise that their sufferings were not exceptional, and we will come to know that they suffered more as a human being than as a leper. This work was developed on the analysis of the facts exposed by the testimonies that I found in the monthly periodical published between November 1952 and December 1982 of the Protestant church Akebono, located in the national leper colony Nagashima Aiseien, Okayama prefecture in Japan.

[Abstract]This study reveals an almost unknown fact about the intimate relationship between Christianity and safety campaigns in Japan that has existed for a long time. Given that while Japanese people have largely not accepted Christianity but accepted a variety of safety campaigns that have been widely promoted in Japan, such a situation can be considered contradictory. We prove through this study that these facts that seem contradictory are not mutually exclusive and are rather associated with one another in a web of ideas, by examining from a historical point of view how safety campaigns have been launched and reached the Japanese non-Christian society. This study discusses Christians and pro-Christians who contributed their efforts to build a safe society and devoted their life to safety campaigns.

[Summary] The present paper aims to show an original birth certificate of Joseph Nicolas Felix Midon (1840-1893), a missionary of the Missions Etrangeres de Paris (MEP) and the first bishop of Osaka, Japan, of the Roman Catholic Church with his brief biography and his family tree. It gives us accurate administrative information of his birth. And, his biographical sketch will help us better understand the important role that he played in the religious history of Japan in the late 19th century, especially from the 1870s to the 1890s. Midon, born at Bonviller in France, was sent as a missionary to Japan in 1870. After having worked under Bernard-Thadee Petitjean and Pierre-Marie Osouf, he was ordained as the first bishop of the Diocese ofOsaka in 1891 and had presided over the Diocese before leaving Japan in 1892 for health reasons. His biographical description is mainly based on the following book : L'abbe Marin, Mgr Midon, Eveque d'Osaka, P. Lethielleux, Paris, 1901.

The Industrial Welfare Society (Sangyo-Fukuri Kyokai), founded in November 1925 and dissolved in March 1936, was an organization which aimed to promote the welfare of factory workers by taking measures to prevent occupational disasters and labor disputes. The Society began as an extra-departmental body of the Home Ministry and, after changing into a juridical foundation in February 1929, continued until it was incorporated into the Harmonization Society (Kyocho-Kai) in April 1936. This paper examines the relationship between the capital-labor cooperation and occupational safety during the prewar period by investigating how the Industrial Welfare Society performed in various areas involving personnel, finance, projects, and philosophy. First, the paper will argue that during this decade the Society was under the control of the Home Ministry's Social Affairs Bureau (Shakai-kyoku), and that, during this time, it was embarrassed by financial difficulties which were growing more and more serious due to the Society's dependence on membership fees which were not stable and not constantly increasing. In April 1936, the Industrial Welfare Society was merged with the Harmonization Society, and the former continued as the Department of Industrial Welfare of the latter. Second, this article maintains that while the Industrial Welfare Society tried to overcome its financial difficulties, the Harmonization Society branched out into new projects of industrial welfare and, as a result, the merger brought their interests together. Kawarada Kakichi (1886-1955), former chief director of the Industrial Welfare Society and managing director of the Harmonization Society, along with Gamo Toshibumi (1883-1966), activist of the Safety Campaign, both played prominent roles not only in the realization of the merger of 1936, but also in the activities of the Industrial Welfare Society. The Industrial Welfare Society had a profound effect on the Harmonization Society, not only in the sense that it caused the latter to make a policy about-face in 1936, but also in the sense that it led the Harmonization Society to emulate its philosophy. This was the philosophy that Kawarada shared with Gamo. In conclusion, the Industrial Welfare Society existed for the purpose of preventing labor disputes and occupational disasters. The Society tried to turn factories into arenas of social welfare for the factory workers, on the understanding that occupational safety is necessary for cooperation between capital and labor.

Based on a meticulous investigation of piles of documents related to Toshibumi Gamo(1883-1966), of which many have not been published nor are open in public, the project reveals that he was the most important key figure of the safety campaign during its rise and development in prewar Japan and his life was devoted to the safety campaign from 1914 to his death, as showing historical facts provided by the primary sources. In particular, his CVs, the writing list of his articles and books(461 writings in total) and his biography are most significant of these fruits.
