This study investigated the effectiveness of dictation as a means of improving listening comprehension in a second language. The treatment group (n = 18) received weekly dictations of about 10 minutes for 12 weeks. At the same time a control group (n = 16) received placebo lessons of 10 minutes on minimal pairs in pronunciation. Two measures of listening comprehension were used to pretest and posttest the students. After 12 weeks of experimental sessions, no significant difference was found in the students' scores on the first posttest; however, a significant difference was found in the students' scores on the second posttest. The results indicate that dictation has the capacity to improve listening comprehension in a second language, but this is demonstrated to varying degrees in the two measures. The discussion looks carefully at potential causes for these differences and ways to address some of the problems encountered in this small study.著者専攻: 第二言語習得
