• 『タイタンの妖女』における時空の喪失者たち ―「記憶」と「身体」の喪失が生み出すヒューマニズム―

  The Sirens of Titan (1959) is one of the science fiction novels written by Kurt Vonnegut and has been highly evaluated for its unique science-fiction setting and existential themes. The characters placed in extreme circumstances show their mental weakness and resilience, and the way they face their own harsh fates is one of the most attractive features of this novel. Yet can the readers fully enjoy its sci-fi setting and plot even if more than 60 years have already passed since its publication? To answer this question, this paper will focus on the two extreme circumstances presented in the story: one where two main characters, Malachi Constant and Beatrice Rumfoord lose “time,” or memory; and the other where other main characters, Winston Niles Rumfoord and Tralfamadorian Salo have lost “space,” or a living body in the physical world. Then I will discuss what the deprivation of “time” or “space” brings to these characters in the story.
• 「ハンク・モーガンが抱える破滅と忘却の宿命--A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Courtの結末についての一考察--」

  Critics have discussed the ambiguity of the personality and behavior of Hank Morgan. Though he is a diligent democrat and has ample knowledge of science and technology, he is also arrogant and aggressive, and a seeker of power and esteem. Hank, in fact, has a vicious aspect in his character. In the last part of the story, he chooses to drive 25,000 knights to their death to protect himself and his 53 followers. After the catastrophe, Hank’s old enemy, magician Merlin made him sleep for 1,300 years under a spell. Then he awoke in the late 19th century and died alone in obscurity. Why does this novel have to end with Hank’s ruin and oblivion? This paper will discuss how Twain depicts the contradictory character, Hank. It also considers how such a personality leads to the grotesque ending of the novel and what meaning readers can find from it.

  Mark Twain 著Roughing It（1872）におけるハワイに関する各章のおよそ３分の２は，1866 年にThe Sacramento Union 紙に掲載され，アメリカ西部読者の人気を博した通信文を編集したものである．しかしながら，オリジナルの通信文と比べると，このハワイ編は，Twain という作家独特のユーモアが十分に発揮されているとは思えない．本稿では，そうした結果を招いた原因は，Roughing It の作品構成と語り手であり中心人物でもある「トウェイン」が備える特徴との関わり，通信文と Roughing It のそれぞれが書かれた執筆時期に隔たりがあること，通信文の編集方針から生じた変化，ハワイという題材そのものがもつ特徴と「トウェイン」が担う役割との関わりなどにあることを指摘している．
