After Yukichi Fukuzawa introduced the modern insurance industry to Japan in his "Western Travel Guide" in 1867, works that adopted insurance as the subject of novels were produced along with the development of the insurance industry in the Meiji era. When the Japanese insurance industry was still in its infancy, Nansui Sudo's Oborozukiyo is a fictional novel written in January 1889. The book became popular with readers for its surprising developments and foreshadowing stories that kept the readers entertained. The purpose of this paper is to examine insurance crimes involving life insurance and non-life insurance through an analysis of Oborozukiyo, written by Nansui Sudo, that is thought to the first novel dealing with insurance in Japan.
