    Summary:© 2018, ICIC International. All rights reserved. The distance to a target is fundamental information required in many engineering applications. We have previously proposed two acoustic distance measurement (ADM) methods, one based on the phase interference between transmitted and reflected waves and the other using a cross-spectral technique. However, the former method is affected by the components of the measurement system. Furthermore, although the latter method mitigates the influence of the measurement system by applying the cross-spectral method to the recordings obtained by two-channel microphones, this method is sensitive to ambient noise. Therefore, we have also proposed a third ADM method applying the cross-spectral technique to different signals. This method estimates the distance to a target using the cross-spectrum of the actual observation and a pseudo-observation, which is the convolution of a pre-estimated impulse response and the dry source signal. Using the pseudo-observation as an input signal in the cross-spectral method makes this method robust against ambient noise. This paper presents a fundamental study on the proposed ADM method using the cross-spectrum of the actual and pseudo observations. In this study, this method was implemented in a prototype system using a microcontroller. The validity of the method was confirmed by applying it in an actual sound field, and the robustness of the prototype system in which the ADM method was implemented against noise was demonstrated.

    Summary:© 2018 ICIC International. The distance to targets is fundamental information in many engineering applications. Recently, an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method has been proposed based on the interference between transmitted and reflected waves, but this method requires the Fourier transform to be applied twice. The ADM method, in which a linear chirp for which the frequency changes linearly with time is adopted as a transmitted sound, has been proposed to reduce the number of applications of the Fourier transform to one. However, due to the influence of the transfer characteristic of a measurement system that includes a loudspeaker and a microphone, the ADM method often estimates a spurious short distance that is different from the true distance. In order to reduce the number of applications of the Fourier transform and eliminate the adverse effect of the measurement system, an ADM method that uses a Hilbert filter has been proposed. In this method, a Hilbert transform filter is used to obtain the analytic signal of a linear chirp for the cross-spectrum. Although this method can theoretically measure distances even when there are multiple targets, its feasibility has not been confirmed. The present paper describes the feasibility of the chirp-based ADM method for multiple targets. We confirmed the validity of the chirp-based ADM method for multiple targets through computer simulation and by applying the method to an actual sound field.

    Summary:In many engineering fields, it is very important to measure the distance and velocity of a moving target. In order to measure the distance to a stationary target, we previously proposed an Acoustic Distance Measurement (ADM) method that is based on the interference between the transmitted and reflected waves. However, due to the Doppler effect, that ADM method results in measurement errors when the target is moving. In this paper, we propose a distance and velocity estimation method for targets moving at a constant velocity; it can be used at short range, and it is based on the interference of the reflection of a single linear chirp. In particular, we introduce frame processing to the measurement of the distance to a moving target. That is, the velocity of the moving target is first estimated by considering the estimated distances in each short interval; the initial position and the distance to the moving target are then evaluated. We confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method through computer simulations and experiments.

    Summary:The sound source localization problem (identifying the distance and the direction from sound source) has been important in various engineering fields and many approaches have been developed, e.g., MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification). However, they often require a microphone array with multiple microphone elements to obtain such information. Meanwhile, since the distance to a target is also important, many distance measurement methods with sound have been proposed. We proposed an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method based on interference between transmitted and reflected waves, which could measure distance at a short range. Existing ADM methods based on interference make errors due to the measuring system from the loudspeaker to the microphone. To remove the effect of the measuring system, a cross-spectral analysis was applied to the observed wave and the pseudo-observed wave, convolving the transmitted wave with the impulse response of the measuring system a priori measured. Attaching a microphone to a target causes multiple reflections (interference between the sound source and the target). This paper describes a method based on the phase interference to estimate the distance between a sound source and a target (reflector), using a single-channel cross-spectrum between the observed and the pseudo-observed waves. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through simulation and experiment.

    Summary:The acoustic distance measurement(ADM) method based on phase interference has been proposed. However, it becomes difficult for ADM to measure the distance to target shorter than distance resolution. Though the principled method for close range has been also proposed by introducing analytic signal, the measurement performance was degraded by the DC component of the power spectrum. This paper describes a new trail on the ADM with 2 ch microphones for very close range measurement by estimating and removing the DC component.

    Summary:The distance estimation method based on interference of linear chirp sound has been proposed. However, the measurement performance was degraded by additional noise. In this paper, we expand the method to a method that is robust to noisy environments by introducing a concept of synchronous addition and spectral subtraction.     Summary:In many engineering fields, distance to target is very important information. Typical distance measurement methods use time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate short distance. On the other hand, a method for measuring short distances using a standing wave, which is generated by phase interference of transmitted and reflected waves, is known in the field of microwave radar. This method is given in a very simple form such that the distance between microphone and target is estimated as a peak value of the range spectrum, which can be obtained by Fourier transform of the power spectrum of the observed wave. However, since the minimum measurable distance depends on the bandwidth of the transmitted wave, the shorter distance measurement requires the wider bandwidth of the transmitted wave. This paper describes a new distance estimation method measurable from 0m based on the phase interference of transmitted and reflected audible sound. More concretely, we introduce an analytic signal instead of the power spectrum and examine the validity and effectiveness of our method by applying it to an actual sound field. © 2012 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

    Summary:In robot sensors and security systems, both range and velocity to a moving target are very important. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate both range and velocity based on the phase interference of subband-divided and timedelayed impulse sound to a moving target in a short range. However, the distance measurement performance of the proposed method was degraded by additional noise in noisy environment. In this paper, the acoustic distance measurement method based on the interference between the transmitted wave and the reflected waves is expanded to a noise-robust method in a noisy environment. In order to measure distance in a low-signal-to-noise ratio (low-SNR) environment, we introduce a concept from synchronous addition and spectral subtraction to the proposed method. Evaluation experiments in a real environment reveal that the proposed method was valid and effective because the proposed method could measure distance in a low-SNR environment. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

General distance measurement method uses a time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate the short distance. On the other hand, the method using phase interference to measure the short distance has been known in the field of microwave radar. Therefore, we have proposed the distance estimation method based on interference between transmitted and reflected audible sound, which can measure the distance between microphone and target with one microphone and one loudspeaker. In this paper, we propose talker localization method based on distance estimation using phase interference. We expand the distance estimation method using phase interference into two microphones (microphone array) in order to estimate talker position. The proposed method can estimate talker position by measuring the distance and direction between target and microphone array. In addition, talker's speech is regarded as a noise in the proposed method. Therefore, we also propose combination of the proposed method and CSP (Cross-power Spectrum Phase analysis) method which is one of the DOA (Direction Of Arrival) estimation methods. We evaluated the performance of talker localization in real environments. The experimental result shows the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2010 the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

We have applied this method to distance estimation using audible sound and shown the validity of that through our simulations and experiments.     Summary:© 2020, ICIC International. All rights reserved. In various fields, the distance to a target is important information. An acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method based on interference between transmitted and reflected waves using audible sound has been proposed. Environmental noise inevitably contaminates observations, and countermeasures against noise are indispensable. Synchronous addition is a method of reducing noise, but this method requires multiple measurements, and correct results cannot be obtained if the sound environment changes. There is also an attempt to reduce noise based on independent component analysis (ICA) using two-channel (2ch) observation signals. In the present study, the goal is to perform distance estimation in a single measurement under high noise. Signal separation by complex ICA using 2ch microphones (mic’s) is less accurate when the mic’s are closer than the sampling interval. In other words, it is difficult to obtain an accurate separation result only using two mic’s. Therefore, ICA is applied to two sets of two signals among 3ch observation signals with one additional mic, and after restoring two ranging signals to the mic positions, the ADM method using the cross-spectral method is applied. Finally, in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, this method is applied to an actual sound environment.

    Summary:In this paper, a method to express individual woven yarns is proposed for structure analysis of a textile fabric with its three-dimensional (3D) X-ray computed tomography (CT) image. In this method, the voxels of the 3D CT image are segmented into each yarn by using the yarn positional information, which is a sequence of the yarn center points. The positional information is obtained by tracing the yarn. The yarn is traced by sequentially estimating its center and orientation. The center and orientation are estimated by correlating the voxel values with a solid model of the yarn. The voxels of the 3D CT image are segmented into each yarn based on a clustering method using the Mahalanobis distance between the voxel and the obtained yarn positional information. Each individual yarn is expressed by the volume-rendering technique with the segmented voxels. The effectiveness of the proposed yarn expression method is confirmed by experimentally applying this method to the 3D image of a plain knitted fabric.

    Summary:In this paper, a novel method is proposed to extract the yarn positional information for the structure analysis of a textile fabric from its three-dimensional (3D) image obtained from its X-ray computed tomography (CT) images. In this paper, the sequence of the points on the yarn centerline is defined as the yarn positional information. The sequence is extracted by tracing the yarn. The yarn is traced using the yarn direction obtained by estimating the directions of its filaments and averaging the estimated filament directions. The filament direction is estimated by correlating the filament part in the 3D CT image with a 3D filament model. The trajectory of the yarn tracing corresponds to the yarn positional information. The validity of the proposed method is discussed by experimentally applying the proposed method to a 3D CT image of a plain knitted fabric. Furthermore, the usefulness is discussed through an experiment, in which the proposed method is applied to a 3D CT image of a plain woven fabric, which is made of a two-folded yarn.

    Summary:We propose a novel automatic weave diagram construction method from yarn positional data of woven fabric. In this work, a set of yarn positional data implies a sequence of center points of a yarn obtained using the yarn tracing method proposed in our previous study. For constructing the weave diagram, the sets of yarn positional data are first divided into warp and weft based on the gradient of a line, which approximates the yarn positional data. The intersections between warp and weft are then calculated using the approximated lines. Then the weave diagram is constructed by comparing the warp positions with the weft positions at all the intersections. The effectiveness of the automatic weave diagram construction method is confirmed by experimentally applying this method to the yarn positional data of a double-layered woven fabric.

    Summary:我々は,脳血管疾患診断支援として,これまでにHMDを用いて,観察者の頭部位置を考慮することにより,あたかも目の前に血管があるかのように血管を観察でき,血管同士の重なりによる死角を無くすために血管を仮想的に操作できるシステムの開発を行っている.これまで,視点変更効果の操作性への影響を検証してきた.しかし,安価なWebカメラとマーカを用いて頭部位置推定を行ったためマーカ認識による遅延やマーカの誤検出等も操作性へ影響を与えていた可能性がある.本研究では,より高速に精度よく頭部位置を推定可能なOculus Riftを用いることで,さらに視点変更効果の操作性への影響を検証する.実際に20代男女8人の被験者を対象に,頭部位置推定による視点変更とマウスによる視点変更をそれぞれ実装した本システムを用いた簡単な作業に要する時間を計測することにより,視点変更が操作性にもたらす影響をこれまでに得られた結果と比較しながら検討する.(著者抄録)

    Summary:我々は、脳血管疾患診断支援として、これまでにHead mounted displayを用いて、観察者の頭部位置を考慮することにより、あたかも目の前に血管があるかのように血管を観察でき、血管の重なりによる死角をなくすために血管を仮想的に操作できるシステムの開発を行ってきた。本システムでは、立体視された血管を操作するが、視覚的効果が操作性に及ぼす影響は十分に検討されていない。本研究では、基礎的検討として、本システムを用いた簡単な作業に要する時間を計測することにより、立体視の効果及び頭部位置を考慮した観察の効果が操作性に及ぼす影響を調べる。実際に20代男女10人の被験者を対象に、立体視による視覚効果および頭部位置を考慮した視覚効果を用いた場合と用いない場合とで作業に要する時間を比較し、これらの視覚効果を用いた場合はともに有意に所要時間が短縮された(p<0.01)。本実験結果より、これらの視覚効果により操作性の向上が図れることが示唆された。(著者抄録)

    Summary:本研究は脳血管の構造を分析するため、頭部3次元CTA画像を利用し、脳血管の位置と径を推定することを目的とする。これまでの研究により、われわれは頭部3次元CTA画像から血管の位置と方向および径を推定する血管モデル相関法を提案してきた。しかしながら、本手法は血管径を推定する際、誤差が生じる問題があった。誤差が生じる原因として、推定の際の血管径の初期値に推定結果が依存すること、および血管モデル相関法の荷重関数のパラメータの調整方法の検討が十分ではないことの2つが挙げられる。そこで、本研究では、血管径の推定精度向上のために、初期値の影響を考慮した血管径手法を提案するとともに、血管モデル相関法の荷重関数のパラメータの調整方法を実験的に検討する。実際の頭部3次元CTA画像に提案手法を適用し、従来手法よりも精度よく血管径を推定できることを確認した。(著者抄録)

    Summary:われわれは頭部Computed tomographic angiography(CTA)画像を対象にして、血管位置と血管径を推定するための血管追跡法を提案してきた。ここで、血管位置とは、血管心線の点列の位置を意味する。本手法により推定された血管位置と血管径は、血管抽出や病変部の推定など、さまざまな応用に用いることができる。しかしながら、本手法において、血管分岐検出の検討が不十分であり、しばしば分岐部の誤検出が生じ、追跡できない血管も少なくなかった。本稿では、球面を用いた血管分岐検出法を新たに提案する。血管位置として推定された血管の中心点を中心に、ある大きさの球面を考え、その球面上に血管があるかどうかで血管の分岐を検出する手法である。本手法の有効性を確認するため、実際の頭部CTA画像に提案手法を適用した結果、提案手法は、これまでの分岐検出法よりも誤検出を大幅に減らせることがわかった。(著者抄録)

    Summary:本論文は、脳血管疾患診断支援を目的に、Computed tomography(CT)やMagnetic resonance Imaging(MRI)画像を3次元表示したまま、血管径や血流の流れる方向の血管径の変化(以下、単に「径の変化」と記す)を可視化するシステムを提案する。脳血管疾患、特に動脈瘤や血管の狭窄など、血管形状の変形による病変の診断において血管径や径の変化を知ることは重要である。本研究では、はじめに脳血管全体の血管位置と径を推定し、血管径および径の変化にもとづき血管を色付けすることにより、血管径および径の変化を可視化する方法を提案してきた。本稿では、観察者が血管径および径の変化と色の対応をスライドバーにより対話的に変更できるようにすることによって、注目部の血管径および径の変化をより詳細に観察できる。実際の頭部CT Angiography画像を用いて、本システムの有用性の検討を行った。(著者抄録)

    Summary:Since the distance to target is very important information, we have proposed an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method using a standing wave, which is generated by interference between transmitted and reflected waves. However, the amplitude-frequency characteristics of the measuring system between the microphone and the loudspeaker are not considered, but these characteristics cannot be ignored in a real environment. To remove the effect of the measuring system, our previous methods required a 2ch microphone or two measurements with targets and without targets. This paper describes a new ADM method considering a movement of transmitting-and-receiving system composed of 1ch microphone and loudspeaker. Finally, we examine the validity and effectiveness of our method by applying it to an actual sound field.

    Summary:本論文は、ヘッドマウントディスプレイ(HMD)を用いて、操作者頭部位置を考慮した3次元画像可視化システムを提案する。本システムにより、あたかも眼前に血管が存在するかのように脳血管を可視化できる。近年、医用画像は3次元的に可視化することが容易になった。しかし、血管構造は複雑なため、単に3次元的に可視化するだけでは、余計な血管が障害物となり、注目領域の目視が困難である。そこで、われわれは、余計な血管を操作するための3次元ポインティングシステムを提案している。本可視化システムと組み合わせることにより、より直感的な脳血管操作が期待できる。本可視化システムは、HMD、HMDに取り付けた頭部位置検出用マーカ、座標定義用基準用マーカ、およびマーカ認識用webカメラにより構成される。頭部位置を検出することにより、操作者の視点から画像を作成できる。実際にシステムを構築し、動作の確認を行った。(著者抄録)

    Summary:日本人の代表的な死因の一つに脳血管疾患がある。脳血管疾患診断にはMRIやCTAなどの医用画像が有効であるが、CTA画像の場合、血管の輝度分布と骨の輝度分布が重なるため、脳底部において、血管のみを抽出することが困難となる。そこで本研究では、先行研究により得られた血管芯線の位置とその半径を利用し、頭部CTA画像から血管画素のみを抽出する。頭部CTA画像の全ての画素において、その画素の位置から血管芯線の各位置までの距離および全画素の輝度分能と血管のみの輝度分布を考慮し、ベイズの定理にしたがって、ある輝度が得られた時のその位置の画素が血管である条件付き確率を求め、その確率に対してしきい値を用いて抽出を行う。実際の頭部CTA画像に対し、本手法を用いて血管画素を抽出した画像と手作業で血管画素を抽出した画像を目視により比較した結果、本手法は血管をよく抽出できることを確認した。(著者抄録)

    Summary:In many engineering fields, distance to target is very important information. Typical distance measurement methods use time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate short distance. On the other hand, a method for measuring short distances using phase interference, which is generated by phase interference of transmitted and reflected waves, is known in the field of microwave radar. However, the minimum measurable distance depends on the bandwidth of transmitted wave. The shorter distance measurement requires the wider bandwith of the transmitted wave. The authors have already proposed the distance eastimation method so as to be able to measure a distance close to 0m, but the method requires two microphones. This paper describes a new distance estimation method measurerable from 0m only using the single microphone. More concretely, we introduce a complex analytic signal instead of power specrum and examine the validity and effectiveness of our method by applying it to an actual sound field.

    Summary:頭部3次元CTA画像などにより、3次元的に血管の形状を再現することは病変部の状態を知る上で有用である。しかし、従来のマウスなどの2次元ポインティングデバイスでは、3次元的な操作を直感的に行うことは困難であり、複雑な構造をもつ脳血管においては病変部などの注目領域に到達することさえ難しい。そこで、頭部CTA画像より抽出された脳血管から3次元血管モデルを作成し、血管モデルを自在に動かすことのできる脳血管疾患診断支援システムの構築を目指し、本研究では、単眼カメラを用いて3次元血管モデルを直感的に操作することのできるポインティングデバイスの開発を行う。立方体のマーカを先端に付けたペンをポインティングデバイスとし、ARToolKitを利用して、デバイスの3次元位置の推定を行い、仮想3次元空間にデバイスの推定位置を投影し、血管モデルの操作を行う。実際に提案する3次元ポインティングデアイスの開発を行い操作性について検討を行った。(著者抄録)

    Summary:In the field of microwave radar the method using phase interference between transmitted wave and reflected waves to measure the short distance is known. We have applied this method to audible sound, and proposed acoustic distance measurement method for the stationary object. However, in real environment, the object is moving in many cases. We consider the tracking method for a moving object by applying the acoustic distance measurement method based on phase interference. In this paper, we discuss acoustic distance measurement method for the moving object using linear chirp signal as transmitted wave. Finally, we confirm the validity of the proposed method through simulations.

    Summary:In many engineering fields, distance to targets is very important. General distance measurement method uses a time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate the short distance, while the method using phase interference to measure the short distance is known in the field of microwave radar. For a transmitted wave with uniform frequency-amplitude characteristics, the power spectrum of the observed wave is periodic with respect to the frequency and its period is inversely proportional to the distance between the microphone and target. We have applied this method to audible sound. However, a spurious peak emerges at the short distance in range spectrum, whether targets exist or not, due to the long periodical trend in the power spectrum. This trend is caused by non-flatness of the magnitude of frequency response from the loudspeaker to the microphone. In order to remove the effect of frequency-amplitude characteristics of the transmitted sound and measuring system, we face the loudspeaker and the microphone toward a direction in which no target exists and obtain the power spectrum of the observed wave as background data, and subtract and/or divide the power spectrum of the composite wave by the background data. Finally, we confirm the validity and effectiveness of our method by experiments.

    Summary:脳血管疾患診断の支援、自動化を目的として、頭部3次元CTA画像を利用した新しい血管芯線の抽出および血管径の推定法を提案する。血管芯線の抽出方法として、距離変換や濃淡情報を利用した細線化処理が考えられるが、これらは本質的には芯線を抽出する処理とは言えず、画像によってはいわゆるひげが生じたりする。本研究では血管の形状情報に着目し、ノイズの影響を考慮したソリッドモデルを用いて血管の中心点と方向を推定し、血管追跡を行うことで血管の芯線を抽出する。血管の中心点と方向を推定する方法として、血管と血管モデルとの相関をとり、相関がもっとも高いときの血管モデルの中心点と方向を血管の中心点と方向とする3次元血管モデル相関法を提案する。さらに血管モデルを径方向に可変とした3次元血管モデル相関法により血管径の推定を行う。実際のCTA画像から手作業で血管のみを抽出した画像に対し、提案手法を適用し、提案手法の妥当性を確認する。(著者抄録)

When a transmitted wave with uniform frequency-amlitude characteristics is radiated, the power spectrum of the observed wave is periodic with respect to the frequency and its period is inversely proportional to the distance between the microphone and target. In adopting the band-limited gaussian noise as a transmitted wave, however, due to the randomness, a number of samples of power spectra to be averaged is required. In order to remove the effect of frequency-amplitude characteristics of the transmitted sound and measuring system, we introduce the following compensation method. We face the loudspeaker and the microphone toward a direction in which no target exists and obtain the power spectrum of the observed wave as background data, and filter out the frequency-amplitude characteristics by a Wiener filter derived from the background data. Finally, we confirm the validity and effectiveness of our method through simulations and experiments.

    Summary:In many engineering fields, distance to targets is very important information. General distance measurement method uses time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate short distance. On the other hand, the method using standing wave to measure short distance is known in the field of microwave radar. We have applied this method to audible sound, and the validity of the method has been shown through simulations and experiments, including a trial on implementation of the method in microcomputer. But, especially for microcomputer system, there has remained a problem that it took a long time to compute FFT twice when using a transmitted sound with a proper frequency bandwidth. In this report, we introduce a chirp sound signal as a transmitted wave to accelerate our method and implement it in microcomputer, and show the small distance measurement system using our method. Finally, we confirm the effectiveness of our proposed system by applying it to the actual sound field.

    Summary:In many engineering fields, distance to targets is very important information. General distance measurement method uses time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to estimate short distance. On the other hand, the method using standing wave to measure short distance is known in the field of microwave radar. We have applied this method to audible sound, and the validity of the method has been shown through simulations and experiments, including a trial on implementation of the method in microcomputer. But, especially for microcomputer system, there has remained a problem that it took a long time to compute FFT twice when using a transmitted sound with a proper frequency bandwidth. In this report, we introduce a chirp sound signal as a transmitted wave to accelerate our method and implement it in microcomputer, and show the small distance measurement system using our method. Finally, we confirm the effectiveness of our proposed system by applying it to the actual sound field.

We have applied this method to the distance estimation using audible sound and shown the validity of our method adopting impulse wave as a transmitted wave. In this research, we use band-limited gaussian noise as a transmitted wave and examine the validity of our method. Moreover, we statistically consider the asymptotic characteristics of the proposed method.

    Summary:Distance to targets is basic and very important information. The time-lag between transmitted and reflected wave is typically used for distance estimation, but the estimation of short distance is usually difficult. The method using standing wave to measure short distance is known in the field of microwave radar. We have expanded this method to audible sound, and the validity of the proposed method has been shown through simulations and experiments. Standing wave contains information on distance, because it occures by interference between transmitted and reflected sound. The power spectrum of observed signal has periodicity with a period corresponding to distance to target. Therefore, the distance is estimated through range spectra obtained by applying Fourier transform again to the power spectrum. As a method similar to the proposed method, there are cepstrum analysis and autocorrelation function. This report shows fundamental consideration on distance estimation using standing wave in audible sound, including a comparison with these methods.

    Summary:Basically, it is important to know the distance and position to the elderly and the patient in order to realize improvement of home health care. The authors have already proposed a method to estimate the distance between a microphone and a target using audible sounds, which is based on the phase interference between transmitted and reflected waves. We call this method Acoustic Distance Measurement (abbr. ADM) method and have studied it from various viewpoints. This ADM method is a practical method just to apply Fourier transform to the power spectrum. However, in the distance measurement using the audible sound, there was a problem that when a person spoke in the surroundings, private conversation was recorded etc. In addition, for example, a human face or body has a relatively small reflection coefficient, and is not a flat plate but a complicated aspect, and the reflected wave is likely to be scattered in various directions. This means that we can only observe very small reflected waves or no reflected waves at all. On the other hand, there is a reproduction method of sound field by parametric array loudspeaker using ultrasonic sound. This paper describes a new trial of ADM from sound source to the human as a target using ultrasonic sound. More concretely, as a method for sound enhancement, we attempt to control a phase of the transmitted ultrasonic sound at each channel using the delay-and-sum beamforming technique. In addition, we try to detect the distance to the target, expanding the original distance estimation method by introducing synchronous addition to the power spectra. Finally, the validity of our method is also confirmed through experiment by applying our method to an actual sound field.

    Summary:The distance to a target is fundamental and very important information in many engineering applications. Kinect is known to have many sensors (e.g., depth sensor, RGB camera, color camera sensor, four-elements microphone array and so on). A depth sensor of Kinect v2 determines distance from Time-of-Flight (TOF) of infrared ray. The sensing range of the depth sensor is adjustable, but it is difficult to measure the distance closer than 0.500 m. Although TOF is typically used for distance estimation, it is difficult to estimate short distance. Alternatively, an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method has been proposed based on the phase interference between transmitted and reflected waves. The procedure of the ADM is as follows: first, to obtain a power spectrum, applying Fourier transform to the observed wave, and then, to obtain a range spectrum, applying Fourier transform again to the power spectrum and taking its absolute value. The power spectrum is a periodical function, whose period is inversely proportional to the distance. Therefore, the distance can be determined from the range spectrum. This ADM method is able to measure the distance closer than 0.500 m. In this study, we focus on performing this ADM using Kinect v2's microphone array. Then we compare measurement accuracies of Kinect's depth sensor and the ADM method. We confirmed the accuracy of the ADM method by performing a computer simulation under an assumption of using Kinect v2's microphone array and by applying it to an actual sound field. In addition, using four-channel (4ch) microphone array, we geometrically estimate the position of the target by combining distances estimated at each channel.

    Summary:The distance to a target is fundamental information in many engineering applications. Recently, an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method has been proposed based on the interference between transmitted and reflected waves, but it requires applying twice the Fourier transform. The ADM method in which a linear chirp whose frequency changes linearly with lapse of time is adopted as a transmitted sound has been proposed to reduce the number of applications of the Fourier transform to once. The observed wave obtained by the linear chirp signal has the distance information as a periodicity in time domain. However, due to the influence of the transfer characteristic of measuring system including a loudspeaker and microphone, the ADM method would often estimate the spurious short distance different from true distance. The ADM method by applying the cross-spectral method to observed signals of the adjacent two-channel (2ch) microphones has been also proposed, where the method adopts a linear chirp as transmitted wave and removes the influence of the measuring system. In this method, Hilbert transform is used to obtain analytic signal of linear chirp for the cross-spectrum, but Hilbert transform originally requires applying twice the Fourier transform. This paper describes an advanced study on the ADM method by applying the cross-spectral method to observed signals of the adjacent 2ch microphones, adopting a linear chirp as transmitted wave and removing the influence of the measuring system. More concretely, though the linear chirp signal in a time domain corresponds to the frequency spectrum, it is not a complex signal but a real signal. To apply the cross-spectral method, the analytic signal of linear chirp that is newly obtained using Hilbert transform filter is introduced. We confirmed the validity of the chirp-based ADM method by performing a computer simulation and by applying it to an actual sound field.

    Summary:Because of current health trends, health foods have recently begun gaining attention in Japan. Some types of bivalve are well known as health foods, and the bivalve native to certain areas of Japan are commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Typically, in such bivalve production areas, regulations for the catching of bivalve are in place to prevent excessive fishing and protect spawning grounds. The catch value is determined based on these regulations. A haul of bivalve will often contain both good and defective bivalve. In this paper, a defective bivalve is defined as a bivalve that is empty or full of mud or water. Because a defective bivalve has the same outward appearance as a good bivalve, it is difficult to visually distinguish between good and defective bivalve. Fishermen identify defective bivalve after fishing, but this identification involves difficult manual work. Discriminating between good and defective bivalve on the fishing boat would increase the ratio of good bivalve in the haul. Therefore, it would be beneficial to develop an automated discrimination method that can be implemented on the boat. Currently, fishermen gently tap the bivalve on a concrete or metal surface, roll the bivalve, and identify defective bivalve based on the sounds produced by these collisions. Previous studies have proposed discrimination methods using images or sound. The image-based method uses a transmission image obtained with near-infrared light; however, this method is very expensive. The sound-based method analyzes the sound produced by the collision of bivalve. In this study, in accordance with the previously proposed sound-based discrimination method, the sound produced by the collision of bivalve with a concrete surface was analyzed, and examined the difference between the collision sounds produced by good and defective bivalves. Finally, the possibility of automatically detecting defective bivalve using acoustic signals is discussed.

    Summary:The distance to a target is basic information in many engineering fields. Recently, the acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method based on the phase interference between transmitted and reflected waves has been proposed. The power spectrum of an observed signal is a periodic function whose period is inversely proportional to the distance between microphone and target. So this ADM is a practical method that just applies Fourier transform to the power spectrum. Furthermore, the theoretically expanded ADM method has been proposed, which can measure the distance from 0 m by introducing analytic signal instead of power spectrum, where the analytic signal is derived from the power spectra of observed signals of two-channel (2ch) microphones. However, when the distance from a target is very close, the expanded ADM method has error due to Direct Current (DC) components of the power spectra. Besides, authors attempted to implement the ADM method measurable from 0 m with the power spectra into compact system. However, the compact system did not have enough computational power. This paper describes a fundamental study on the ADM method by using the phase spectra of observed signals of 2ch microphones instead of the power spectra and an implementation of the ADM method into prototype compact system introducing high speed microcomputer system, considering DC component of the power spectra. More concretely although the phase spectrum is also a periodic function whose period is inversely proportional to the distance between microphone and target, it has no DC components. We confirmed the validity of the new ADM method measurable from 0 m with phase spectrum by performing a computer simulation and by applying it to an actual sound field and also confirmed the effectiveness of prototype compact system by implementing this ADM theory.

    Summary:The distance to a target is important information in various engineering fields. When measuring the distance to a target using audible sound, in general, an impulsive sound is transmitted toward the target and the time difference between the transmitted and reflected waves is obtained to determine the distance. However, this method cannot be applied to short distances where a reflected wave is buried in a transmitted wave. On the other hand, in the field of microwave radar, this distance measurement method has been proposed for plural targets, and can be applied to distances close to 0 m (i.e., a standing-wave radar). We have extended this distance measurement method so as to measure precisely the distance to the target in ranges close to 0 m by applying the principle of the standing wave radar to distance measurement using a sound signal. In this paper, first we will explain the principle of acoustical distance measurement methods based on phase interference using audible sound, and then by introducing an analytic signal, we describe in detail an acoustical distance measurement method, especially for a target that exists at a distance of around 0 m. Simulation results and experimental results are also shown.

    Summary:The distance to a target is fundamental information in many engineering applications, and an acoustical signal, especially an ultrasonic sound, often plays an essential role in measuring such a distance. Many proposed methods for measuring distance use the time delay between the transmitted and reflected waves, but it is difficult to measure short distances when the reflected waves are buried in the transmitted wave. Recently, a method to measure short distances using standing wave in the research field of microwave was proposed by T. Uebo et al. We applied the fundamental principles of that method to the estimation of short distances when using audible sound as the transmitted wave. This enables us to obtain the range spectrum from the power spectrum of the composite sound and to measure either short- or long-range distances, but it requires two applications of the Fourier transform. We propose a method for estimating distance that uses a chirp (a signal in which the frequency changes over time) as the transmitted wave, because the period of the power fluctuation of the composite sound will be inversely proportional to the distance between the microphone and the target. We confirmed the validity of the chirp -based distance estimate by performing a computer simulation and by applying it to an actual sound field.

    Summary:In order to achieve the realistic sensation of sound, sound field reproduction technique plays a very important role. The sound field reproduction technology is roughly classified into binaural and transaural reproduction systems. The former has a merit that it can be implemented in small scale systems under the assumption of the headphone listening but it is somewhat burdensome to wear the headphone. Although the latter does not require headphones, it requires large scale system to reproduce the sound field. In this paper, we focus on the development of small scale sound reproduction system. If the distance between sound source and listener is a priori known, it may be possible to reproduce the sound field more accurately. As a method of distance estimation for a target, acoustical distance measurement (ADM) was proposed based on phase interference using audible sound. However, measurement of audible sound has the potential to record private information such as conversation, which may yield a privacy issue. There is a reproduction method of sound field by parametric loudspeaker using ultrasonic sound. Therefore, in order to reproduce sound field more accurately, protecting personal conversation from the sound measurement, this paper describes a new method to estimate the distance using an ultrasonic wave. This acoustic distance measurement is based on interference between direct wave and reflected wave using ultrasonic wave. First, the composite wave of direct wave and reflected wave is observed, and then the power spectrum of the composite wave is obtained by Fourier transform. The power spectrum of composite wave is a periodical function whose period is inversely proportional to the distance between microphone and target. Finally, by applying Fourier transform again to the power spectrum, the range spectrum is obtained, whose peak position corresponds to the distance. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is applied to the actual situation of distance measurement by using ultrasonic sound.

    Summary:In acoustic applications, it is often important to estimate the distance to the sound source. The conventional way to estimate the distance to the target is based on the time delay between the transmitted and reflected waves, but this method cannot be used when the reflected wave is buried in the transmitted wave. Thus, a method has been proposed that uses the interference between the transmitted and reflected waves to estimate the distance to the target. In an existing method for measuring acoustic distance based on phase interference, it has been shown that a spurious peak appears in the range spectrum (which is the absolute value of the Fourier transform of the power spectrum; the position of its peak corresponds to the distance). The spurious peak is caused by the measuring system from the loudspeaker to the microphone. To remove the effect of the measuring system, a single-channel cross-spectral analysis was applied to the observed wave and a pseudo observed wave, which was the result of convolving the transmitted wave with the impulse response of the measuring system, as measured in advance. We note that attaching a microphone to a target causes multiple reflections (interference between the sound source and the target). Thus, in this paper, we propose a method based on the phase interference to estimate the distance between a sound source and a target, using single-channel cross-spectral analysis of the observed wave and a pseudo-observed wave. We also present the results of applying the proposed method to estimating the distance to the source of a sound (human voice).

    Summary:In many engineering fields, it is very important to measure the distance of an object which is called a target in this paper. In order to measure the distance to a stationary target, we previously proposed an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) method that is based on the interference (i.e., standing waves) between the transmitted and reflected waves. Using standing waves to measure distances is a very practical approach, and simply requires the application of the Fourier transform to the power spectrum of the observed wave. The absolute value of this Fourier transform is called the range spectrum, and the location of its peak is the estimated value of the distance from the microphone to the target. We extended the method for measuring short distances by using the standing wave in the audible sound. However, due to the Doppler effect, that ADM method results in measurement errors when the target is moving. More concretely, the range spectrum has not a sharp peak but a wide peak, and the peak is referred to as a main lobe in this paper. This means that it is necessary to estimate both the distance and velocity of the moving target. In this paper, we propose a practical method to estimate the distance and velocity for targets moving at a constant velocity; it can be used at short range, and it is based on the interference of the reflection of a single linear chirp. The velocity of the moving target is first estimated by the width of main lobe in the range spectrum. Then, the initial position of the target is estimated. We confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method through computer simulations and experiments.

    Summary:In this paper, a method to estimate a filament orientation is proposed in a three dimensional computer tomography (3D CT) image of a textile fabric for a structure analysis. In this study, yarn positional information is obtained as the structure analysis of the textile fabric by using the estimated filament orientation at each voxel of the 3D CT image. In previous study, the filament orientation was estimated by correlating a filament model, which is cylindrical solid model, with the 3D CT image. Since the maximum value of the correlation is calculated by an iterative calculation method, an extraordinary amount of time is required to estimate the filament orientation over the 3D CT image. In this paper, a different approach to estimate the filament orientation is proposed in order to shorten the processing time: a principal component analysis-based method is proposed. The axis of the first principal component is regarded as the filament orientation. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experimentally applying the proposed method to actual textile fabric. The effectiveness of the proposed method is then indicated by comparing the processing times of the filament orientation estimation by the proposed and previous methods.

    Summary:In this paper, a method to express individual woven yarns is proposed for structure analysis of a textile fabric with its three-dimensional (3D) X-ray computed tomography (CT) image. In this method, the voxels of the 3D CT image are segmented into each yarn by using the yarn position, which corresponds to the position of a sequence of the yarn center points, and the distribution of the filaments constructing the yarn. In order to obtain the yarn position, the filament orientation is first estimated at all the voxels in the 3D CT image by correlating the voxel values with a filament model. Each filament is then reconstructed by connecting the voxels of the filaments based on the estimated filament orientation. Each yarn is then reconstructed by binding the reconstructed filaments using a dissimilarity between two filaments. Finally, the yarn position is obtained by thinning the reconstructed yarns. The voxels of the 3D CT image are segmented into each yarn based on a clustering method using the Mahalanobis distance between the voxel and the obtained yarn center point considering the distribution of the filaments. Each individual yarn is expressed by the volume-rendering technique with the segmented voxels. The effectiveness of the proposed yarn expression method is confirmed by experimentally applying this method to the 3D image of a plain knitted fabric.

    Summary:Patients who have difficulty moving their muscles freely require support for various situations that occur in everyday life. A controllable robot arm without using muscles may make the patient's quality of life improve. By using a brain-computer interface (BCI), control of the robot arm is possible by thought alone. Therefore, we have constructed several robot arms with an ultrasonic range finder and a web camera for BCI system. By utilizing these devices, collisions between the robot arm and the user could be avoided and control could be partially automated. The distance is very important information in the system. In the present work, an acoustic distance measurement (ADM) device was used. It consists of equipment with easy acquisition and does not need an electronic circuit which is in the ultrasonic range finder. It is a new device and has a possibility of simplifying the ADM device.

However, the amplitude-frequency characteristics of the measuring system between the microphone and the loudspeaker are not considered, but these characteristics cannot be ignored in a real environment. To remove the effect of the measuring system, our previous methods required a 2ch microphone or two measurements with targets and without targets. This paper describes a new ADM method considering a movement of transmitting-and-receiving system composed of 1ch microphone and loudspeaker. Finally, we examine the validity and effectiveness of our method by applying it to an actual sound field.

    Summary:In this paper, a method for segmenting intertwining stringlike objects (strings) in a three-dimensional (3D) X-ray computed tomography (CT) image is proposed. In the proposed method, the positional information, which is a sequence of the center points of the string, is used. The positional information is obtained by tracing the string. The string is traced by sequentially estimating the center and direction of it. The center and direction are estimated by correlating the voxel values with a solid model of the string. The voxels in the 3D CT image are segmented into the strings by clustering on the basis of distance between the voxel and the obtained positional information.     Summary:We propose a novel automatic weave diagram construction method from yarn positional data of woven fabric. In this work, a set of yarn positional data implies a sequence of center points of a yarn obtained using the yarn tracing method proposed in our previous study. For constructing the weave diagram, the sets of yarn positional data are first divided into warp and weft based on the gradient of a line, which approximates the yarn positional data. The intersections between warp and weft are then calculated using the approximated lines. Then the weave diagram is constructed by comparing the warp positions with the weft positions at all the intersections. The effectiveness of the automatic weave diagram construction method is confirmed by experimentally applying this method to the yarn positional data of a double-layered woven fabric. © 2008, SAGE Publications. Each yam is then reconstructed by binding up the reconstructed filaments using a newly defined distance between two filaments. Finally, the yam positional information is obtained by thinning the reconstructed yams. The voxels of the 3D CT image is segmented into each yarn based on a newly defined dissimilarity to the extracted yam positional information. Using the segmented voxels, each individual yam is expressed with volume rendering. The effectiveness of the proposed yam expression method is discussed by experimentally applying this method to 3D image of a plain knitted fabric.

    Summary:In this paper, a novel method is proposed to non-destructively extract the yam positional information for the structure analysis of a textile fabric from its three-dimensional (3D) image obtained from its X-ray computed tomography (CT). In this paper, a sequence of the points on the center line of each yam of the sample fabric is defined as the yam positional information. In order to extract the sequence, first, the directions of the yarns are estimated by correlating the voxels of the 3D CT image with a yam model over the entire 3D CT image, from which the vector field of the yam direction results. Then, the yarn positional information is extracted by reconstructing the yam using the obtained vector field of the yam direction. The effectiveness of this method is discussed by experimentally applying this method to the 3D CT image of a double-layered woven fabric.

Each filament is secondly reconstructed by connecting the voxels of the filaments based on the estimated filament directions.   • 日本学術振興会, 科研費(若手研究(B)), Structure Analysis of Knitted Fabric with Yarn Positional Information Extracted from Three-dimensional CT Image, 本研究は、3次元CT(Computed Tomography)画像より抽出された糸位置情報を利用した編組織自動解析による組織図作成を目的とし、「よこ編」および「たて編」を対象に「基本編目解析」方法の提案を行った。さらに提案手法の正当性の確認のため、実際のよこ編物およびたて編物に対して編組織自動解析による組織図作成実験を行い、正しく組織図を作成できることを確認した。組織図作成とはすべての編目を解析し、対応する編成記号を意匠紙に記す作業で、現在は主に手作業で行われている。
