    Summary:An evaluation of adsorbent for the treatment of paraquat poisoning was performed. Forty kinds of materials (activated carbons, zeolites, molecular sieves, cation exchange resins, etc.) were used as removers, and the removal ratios and removal rates in vitro were discussed. The results show that cation exchange resin had a high removal ratio and rate. It was concluded that the removal rate of paraquat was mainly dominated by the degree of cross-linkage in the cation exchange resin. Moreover, it was found that cation exchange resins of the gel-type were more advantageous than those of the macroreticular type. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate, kayexalate, showed the greatest removal ratio and rate because of its great external surface area.

    Summary:The sorption isotherms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) were measured in artificial gastric juice (AGJ) and artificial intestinal juice (AIJ) at 37 degrees C and then the sorption behavior of IDF was examined. Benz [a] anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene were used. It was suggested that the uptake of PAHs by carboxymethyle cellulose (CMC), agar, and IDF from powdered young barley leaves (YBL) involved not single sorption behavior, but complex sorption behavior. YBL had an extraordinarily high sorption capacity (60.7-147.3 nmol/g in AGJ and 76.7-162.7 nmol/g in AIJ), as compared with CMC (1.5-3.6 nmol/g in AGJ and 1.1-2.7 nmol/g in AIJ) and agar (0.1-0.4 nmol/g in AGJ and 0.3-0.7 nmol/g in AIJ) at a residual concentration of 5.0 nM. The sorption of PAHs in AGJ and the desorption of PAHs from IDF in both AGJ and AIJ indicate that the sorbed PAH molecules are held firmly by IDF while it passes through the digestive tract in vivo. From the results on sorption capacity and the removability of PAHs from IDF, YBL would be expected to be more useful than CMC and agar.

    Summary:N-Containing activated carbon (N-CAC) was prepared by impregnating activated carbon with N-containing additives. Adsorption isotherms of hydrogen sulfide on N-CACs were obtained by a gravimetric method at 30°. A positive correlation between N content and specific adsorption of hydrogen sulfide at an equilibrium pressure of 50 Torr was found. It is considered that the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide resulted in the volume filling of micropores of N-CAC, based on application of the Dubinin-Astakhov equation to the adsorption isotherms. The finding that the net differential heat of adsorption and differential molar entropy of adsorption decreased with increasing degree of filling of micropores indicated that the micropores of N-CAC were successively filled with hydrogen sulfide from the smallest pores to the largest ones, and that hydrogen sulfide molecules were compactly filled in the micropores at an early stage of filling.
