    Summary:In this paper, a method for designing flexible mixed-product lines is presented. This design method consists of a new algorithm imitating fission of living beings and has been created to solve the design problems or which search trees become widely expanded. The algorithm is called fissiparous algorithm and could belong to evolutionary algorithm. Conventional evolutionary algorithms change chromosomes randomly or according to probabilistic rules. But our fissiparous algorithm does not change chromosomes so. This algorithm changes chromosomes or each individual in the population by a power accelerating the evolution. This design method searches out a solution of the design problem by assigning tasks in the chromosome to each workstation and selecting a kind of "condition of station". The validity of this method was confirmed by solving problems.

    Summary:In this paper, we propose a design method which considers the balance of work load among cells for Cellular Manufacturing Systems. Cellular Manufacturing Systems are supposed that there are a number of cells and common-workstations. In particular, we develop a support tool that is able to use in various situation. The support tool has an improved Fissiparous Algorithm designed for Cellular Manufacturing Systems. Finally we solve design problems and show the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

    Summary:Product lines are usually designed in various conditions. If requirements of the production change, the product line should be adjusted, to the suitable one. There are many types of optimization method, such as addition or reduction of stations in the production line in succession to the structure of the existing line. In this paper, we propose a design method for flexible mixed-product lines in various conditions. We have proposed the Fissiparous Algorithm and already shown the effectiveness by designing flexible mixed-product lines. We developed the Fissiparous Algorithm by new operations and used it to design flexible mixed-product lines with various product conditions. The validity of this design method using the Fissiparous Algorithm is shown through solving several design problems of flexible mixed-product lines.

    Summary:In this paper, we propose a new business model for electronic commerce. In this model, we aim at the maximization of customer's satisfaction and the enterprise's throughput. To achieve the goal, we use the fissiparous algorithm which belongs to evolutionary algorithm. Through some numerical examples, we show the validity of our proposed model.

    Summary:This paper proposes an economic model for the selection of time-varying control chart parameters for monitoring on-line the mean and variance of a normally distributed quality characteristic. The process is subject to two independent assignable causes. One cause changes the process mean and the other chances the process variance. The occurrence times of these assignable causes are described by Weibull distributions having increasing failure rates. The paper combines two existing models: (1) the model of Ohta and Rahim (HE Transactions 1997; 29:481-486) for a dynamic economic design of (X) over bar control charts, where a single assignable cause occurs according to a Weibull distribution and all design parameters are time varying; (H) the model of Costa and Rahim (QRE International :2000; 16:143-156) for the joint economic design of (X) over bar and R control charts where two assignable causes occur independently according to Weibull distribution, with variable sampling intervals.     Summary:Recently, Watanabe et al. proposed a back propagation algorithm via the extended Kalman filter, in which the learning rate was time-varying. In their algorithm the weights and biases are treated as independent variables. It is, however, natural that the weights and biases are not always independent, and generally have mutual correlation. In this paper, we improve the back propagation algorithm by considering that there is mutual correlation among the weights and bias directly connected to the unit. Through some numerical examples, our improved learning algorithm is compared with Watanabe et al.’s algorithm in learning ability. Furthermore, we consider demand forecasting as a kind of pattern recognition, and propose a demand forecasting method using layered neural networks with the improved learning algorithm. The effectiveness of this demand forecasting method is also discussed through some simulations. © 1996 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
