    Summary:<p>Helical gears have long been known as one of the most commonly used mechanical components in transmitting power. Recently, the power to be transmitted has become large, and the engine speed is also increasing. However, the lubrication condition and the surface temperature that dominate the failure of the helical gear are complicated and not fully understood. Since the surface failure is influenced by temperatures in the tooth contacts, it is very important to know the surface temperatures of gears in operation. However, measuring the surface temperatures of gears in operation is difficult. As an effective means to measure the surface temperatures, method using dissimilar metals is known. The voltage proportional to surface temperatures was produced by contacting dissimilar metals. This is known as Seebeck effect. In this study, S55C (Carbon steel) and SUS316 (Stainless steel) were selected to dissimilar metals. Both dissimilar metals were heat-treated and surface were hardened. SUS316 was vacuum carburizing process and S55C was performed induction hardening. In order to remove the influence multiple meshing, the gear was designed so that the total contact ratio which is the sum of transverse contact ratio and the overlap contact ratio was less than 2. This result secured the area of a single contact zone. Surface temperatures measurement using hardened helical gears succeeded in the area of single contact zone. When we compared the experimental values and the theoretical values using Blok's formula considering with lengthwise sliding velocity, surface temperatures on gear teeth were largely same.</p>

    Summary:<p>In the cross roller bearing, rollers are arranged crosswise with each roller perpendicular to the adjacent roller in a V groove. This design allows one bearing to receive loads in all direction. Since the cross roller bearing achieves high rigidity despite the minimum dimensions of the inner and outer rings, it is optimal for applications such as the joints of industrial robots, swiveling tables of machining centers and medical equipment. Although the cross roller bearing has high rigidity, friction torque is said to be high compared to other bearings. Studies of the friction torque of the cross roller bearing have hardly been published. In the cross roller bearing, it is said that preload affects friction torque, but preload measurement method of the cross roller bearing has also not been studied. In this study, the authors measure preload of the cross roller bearing with a newly developed method, and the relationship between tightening torque and preload was clarified. Furthermore, experiments on the influence of preload and grease components on friction torque were carried out. The results showed that, the influence of preload is small and the influence of kinematic viscosity of grease base oil is large.</p>

    Summary:<p>Power transmission systems using gears require both large capacity and miniaturization. As a result, the gears used in power transmission need to be strong enough to withstand high loads and high engine speeds. Because surface damage and temperature are related, it is very important to know the surface temperature of gears in operation. However, measuring the surface temperature of gears in operation is difficult. As an effective means to measure the surface temperature, method of using dissimilar metals is known. The voltage proportional to surface temperature was produced by contacting dissimilar metals. This is known as Seebeck effect. The authors tried to use two simple ferrous metals. In this study, S55C (Carbon steel) and SUS316 (Stainless steel) were selected to dissimilar metals. Both dissimilar metals were heat-treated and surfaces were hardened. SUS316 was performed plasma carburizing process and S55C was performed induction hardening. As for the gear, it is known that the two or more teeth will mesh simultaneously. In order to remove the influence of the number of tooth in operation, the gear of two sheets were made into the one structure meshed by turns (combined lacked gear). When making the gear of two sheets into one structure meshed by turns. The experiments were operated on maximum condition of contact pressure 1.47GPa in a pitch point. As a result, surface temperature measured almost successfully by combined lacked gear by SUS316 plasma carburizing process and S55C induction hardening. When we compared the experimental values and the theoretical values using Blok's formula, surface temperatures on gear teeth values were largely same.</p>

    Summary:Micro traction drive is a transmission by using of modified ball bearing. The traction force is generated by the thrust pre-load between inner race and outer race. The driving force is transmitted by using of retainer that is connected to output shaft. Test-drives of micro traction drive have been carried out as single stage type (reduction ratio around 2.0) and as tandem stage type (reduction ratio 7.3). The dimension of the micro traction drive is 10mm inner diameter, and 30mm outer diameter. As a result of the test, we have found that single stage type traction drive can transmit higher torque, higher number of revolution with lower noise and vibration than planetary gear head. Tandem type traction drive has been successfully operated at maximum speed 20000 rpm.

    Summary:This paper discusses about the new vibration model of gear pair in consideration of oil film force in order to evaluate the dynamic load in steady meshing and the impact load in tooth flank separation with sufficient accuracy. This new vibration model is constituted by combining an oil film model and a spring and damping model in series. In the oil film model, the force produced according to the wedge and the squeeze effect of an oil film between meshing teeth was modeled. Moreover, it was also taken into consideration that viscosity changes with oil film pressure. A spring and damping model represent the force generated by bending of a tooth, and fluctuation of stiffness accompanying change of number of meshing teeth and meshing position was taken into consideration. This model was applied to a pair of gears on which fixed torque acts and the camshaft drive gear which tooth flank separation generates by fluctuation torque. And comparison of a calculation result and an experimental result was performed to tooth root stress. The calculation results and the experimental results showed the good coincidence, and it was clarified that the model was appropriate.

    Summary:This paper discusses the nonlinear characteristics of the gear coupling derived by tooth contact analysis and the verification test of the analysis method. Tooth contact analysis evaluates the load distribution by solving simultaneous linear inequality derived from compatibility condition of the tooth deformation and balance condition of the force. By applying this method to the gear coupling, we evaluated bending moment and shear force. It was found that nonlinearity of stiffness and damping occurred by the change of contact region of all teeth by load torque or alignment. Rotor dynamics coefficient of the gear coupling was clarified, and it was enabled that the nonlinearity of the gear coupling could be considered for the design of rotating machinery. Next, the tooth stress, bending moment and shear force were measured in the static loading test to verify the analysis method. Analysis results showed the good agreement with the experimental ones, and it was clarified that the analysis method was appropriate.

    Summary:This paper presents experimental study and numerical simulation of vibration and noise of a speed increaser, which consist of a star type planetary gears and a planetary type epicyclic gear train. The ring mode vibration of internal gear in the star type planetary gears and torsional vibration of planetary gear in the planetary type epicyclic gear train are measured by use of telemetry system. The influence of tooth profile error for the vibration and the noise is clarified. The numerical simulation is also carried out to evaluate the exciting force and it's associated vibration. In this method, the coupled vibration of shaft bending, torsinal and ring mode vibration of the internal gear are taken into account employing modal synthesis method. The simulation results shows a good agreement with the experimental ones. And it is found that the ring mode vibration magnifies the higher order component of gear mating frequency.

    Summary:Spin on the contact surfaces between two elements occurs in such diverse machine elements as angular contact ball bearings or continuously variable transmissions adapting traction drives. We experimentally and analytically studied the effect of spin on lubricating oil film thickness on angular contact ball and disk. Oil film thickness was measured under different spin angular velocities for constant rolling velocity and different contact loads using optical interference method. We clarified the effect of spin on minimum and central thickness of oil film and film shape and analyzed thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) considering spin under experimental conditions. Analytical and experimental results agreed well.

    Summary:In order to make clear the causes of heat generation, friction loss and tribo-failures such as smearing in high speed ball bearings, it is indispensable to grasp the contact conditions between ball and races or between ball and separator, and the development of measuring method of the actual ball motion has been desired. In the present paper, using hall elements arranged on the fixed oblique coordinates, the authors measured the behavior of the three dimensional ball motion in the angular contact ball bearing 7209 A under various running conditions. The results were compared with those of the conventional method with a moving orthogonal coordinate system and it was confirmed that the measured values such as the rotational speed of the ball and the separator almost agree by two different methods. It was recognized that the propositional method is practical use and useful.

    Summary:In order to examine the behavior of planetary traction drive when the loading torque varies rapidly, experiments were performed. From the experiments and discussions, following conclusions were obtained. (1) Because of the higher contact pressure between rollers, slip ratio between ring roller and planetary roller increase first when the loading torque is over the transmissible torque of the planetary traction drive. (2) If the slip ratio between ring and planetary roller became high, traction coefficient between ring and planetary roller increased and slip occurred between sun roller and planetary roller. At last severe wear and siezure occurred. (3) If the temperature of the surface of roller reached about 160°C by frictional heating, traction coefficient started increasing. Similar phenomenon was found in the four ball test using hot traction oil.

    Summary:In this study the infulence of slip ratio, contact pressure and slip time on the seizure of steel rollers was investigated experimantally by two-roller type tester and theoretically by non-steady thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (THL) theory. Following conclusions were obtained. (1) The slip time influences on the critical condition for seizure. Long continuous slip causes the seizure easily. (2) Break of the oil film between the rollers more strongly effects on the occurence of seizure than the temperature of the rollers. (3) By the THL calculation, it is possible to estimate the occurence of the break of oil film between the rollers.

    Summary:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect on oil film thickness and traction coefficient by the sudden chnage of loaded torque on traction drives. The experimental measurements of oil film thickness and traction force were performed using the optical interferometic observation method. And the comparison of experimental results with calculations of the two dimensional non-steady thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) was performed. We obtained that oil film thickness and traction coefficient decrease though the rotating speed of roller and disc increase, and our discusion lead that the reason of the decrease is the effect of the increase of oil film temperature by shear. The consideration of frictional heating improved the accuracy of calculations about oil film thickness and traction coefficient.

    Summary:In current industry, the high speed turbo machineries like compressors and steam or gas turbines have a tendency to be increased in their power capacities. With this tendency we will be faced that the gear size become large. Becoming large size of gear arises nonuniform temperature distribution. As the result of nonuniform temperature distribution, nonuniform thermal distortion will happen. Changing in load distribution due to thermal distortion considered to be closely related the cause of scoring and pitting failures. In order to ensure reliability of high speed gear unit, it is necessary to improve these techniques. (1) A method for predicting the temperature rise of gears and thermal distortion. (2) Tooth correction against thermal distortion. In this study the three dimensional model of calculating temperature of teeth surfaces and blanks is presented. That model includes the effect of convective cooling by lubricating oil and changing in load distribution due to mechanical deformation. Calculated results of gear teeth temperature and bending stress are reasonably close rimntal results. It is confirmed that the analtical method is practical and useful.

    Summary:To reduce the size of reduction gears of the large drainage pump and helicopter where large power is transmitted through crossed shafts, it is necessary to increase rotational speed and decrease transmitted torque and load. To know dynamic behavior of high speed bevel gear, the experiments were carried out where dynamic loads were measured. Also a spiral bevel gear set computer program has been developed that makes use of meshing dynamic loads and contact patterns. And then, the following results were obtained. (1) A power absorbing spiral bevel gear testing machine (18, 400 kw) which was designed by the developed program could be operated up to high line velocity (∼117m/s) (2) Analytical results of dynamic load agreed with the experimental results. It was Confirmed that the analytical method has practical accuracy and usefulness.

    Summary:The spiral bevel gears are used widely for as main reduction gears of large drainage pump and helicopter. To reduce the size of reduction gears where large power is tranSmitted through crossed shafts, it is necessary to increase rotational speed and decrease transmitted torque and load. But, the reasonable and concise guide to design of these heavily loaded high speed spiral bevel gears is not yet obtained. In the present taper, the dynamic behavior of a spiral bevel gear was investigated under large power (18 755kW) and high speed (∼117m/S) conditions, using a power absorbing gear testing machine, and by measuring the tooth root stresses, and the temperatures. In comparison with these measured date, the dynamic characteristic of heavily loaded and high speed spiral bevel gears become clear.

    Summary:To reduce the size of reduction gears where big power is transmitted through crossed shafts, it is necessary to increase rotational speed and decrease the transmitted torque and load. To know dynamic behaviour of high speed bevel gears, the experiments were carried out and tooth root stress and temperature were measured. Also a spiral bevel gear set analysis has been developed that makes use of mesh stiffness calculations based on finite-element methods. The analysis enables the calculation of dynamic loads. And then, the following results were obtained. (1) A power absorbing gear testing machine (960 kW) could be operated up to high pitch line velocity (∼110 m/s) and it is found that dynamic loads is nine times as much as static loads under the condition of 110 m/s. (2) Analytical results of dynamic load agreed with the experimental results. It was confirmed that the analytical method has practical accuracy and usefulness.

    Summary:The purpose of this study are to ensure reliability of the power transmission gears, and to predict operating condition of high speed gears especially with regard to temperature distribution in teeth and blanks. The experiments were carried out using power circulating gear testing machine (1100 kW) under ultra high pitch line velocity (∼150 m/s) and temperature distribution in teeth and blanks were measured. By the experiments, the following facts are known. By increasing line velocity, the temperature of teeth increase parabolically and the distribution of bending stress become nonuniform along face width.

    Summary:The phenomenon of scoring, which determines operating conditions of cylindrical worm gears, is studied. Using power to circulate a worm gear testing machine and by changing the test conditions, for example, assembling errors of gears, loading torque and pitch line velocity, the initial scoring limit condition of a tooth surface was confirmed. The distributions of local contact pressure, sliding velocity and oil film on the gear tooth surface were calculated by a theoretical method previously developed by us. This method can treat the effect of change in load distribution on the gear tooth surface due to mechanical deformation. We observed a good relation ship between scoring limit on the gear tooth surface and the result of contact pressure and sliding velocity which was calculated based on initial errors of gears. Furthermore, the relation ship between the phenomenon of scoring and the change of surface temperature or root stress is studied and wear rate of gear tooth surface is investigated under the conditions close to those of the scoring limit finally, useful gear designing data are presented.

    Summary:Judging from manufacturing errors and deflections under load, worm gears do not operate in their ideal relative positions. It is important to predict the load distribution considering tooth profile and setting error. A method for determining the load distribution, Hertzian contact pressure and oil film thickness is presented in this paper. Using our empirical formula for bending deflections, we developed the matrix of transformation. The deflection along the load direction on any point of a contact line at the same meshing position is expressed by the matrix of transformation. Using this matrix, the load distribution of a worm and wheel is evaluated with numerical analysis. It is obvious that the calculated results agree comparatively with experimental ones under actual operating conditions. With this calculating method, the effects of various types of misalignment on tooth contact are clarified.

    Summary:Worm gears offer large reduction ratios and low noise for their load capacities. However owing to manufacturing errors and bending deflections under load, a worm and a wheel do not operate in their theoretical load distribution in meshing. The consequences of poor load distribution influence lubrication and reduce gear life. To obtain actual load distribution on the tooth surface, it is important to know the deflection characteristics of the tooth. To this end, we employed laser holographic interferometry. This method is very useful because it allows us to obtain complete surface information in a short time without making contact with the surface. Based on the experimental results, the empirical formula of tooth deflections was derived. The calculated results using this formula showed fairly good agreement with the experimental results.
