[Abstract]Information on the probable course of a ball pitched by a baseball pitcher on the speed and accuracy of the batters' anticipatory responses were investigated. Participants (N=8)were required to watch a video of a pitcher throwing a ball and anticipate the course of the ball, "as quickly and accurately as possible."Four information conditions on the probable path of the ball : (1)No information, (2)approximately 57%, (3)approximately 71%, and (4)approximately 86% probability were randomly shown in seven trials. The results indicated that accuracy of anticipation significantly increased when the pitcher threw a ball in the course identical to previously presented information under the high probability(approximately 86%), compared to the no information condition, Furthermore, in the high probability condition, the accuracy was significantly lower and less than chance level (50%), when the ball was thrown in a different course to previously presented information, compared to when the ball was thrown in the identical course to preceding information. The above results indicate that the usefulness of previously shown information for improving accuracy of anticipation depended on the accuracy of information, and that results that differed from the preceding information decreased accuracy. It is conduced that prior information has both positive and negative effects on the anticipatory response.

[Abstract] In the present study, psychological variables such as state anxiety, physiological variables such as the heart rate and respiration, and performance variables such as speed and accuracy of anticipation were investigated when performing an anticipation task under pressure. University baseball players (n=21) were instructed to anticipate one of two pitch types shown in a video, "as quickly and accurately as possible." After 60 acquisition trials, they performed 10 non-pressure trials followed by 10 pressure trials. Results indicated that state anxiety, heart rate, and respiratory speed increased significantly under pressure. Furthermore, whereas 7 of 21 participants showed an improvement in anticipation skills as indicated by shorter reaction times, the other 14 participants showed a significant decrease in the accuracy of anticipatory skills under pressure.

The first purpose of this study was to examine the influences of explicit and implicit perceptual training on the reaction-time and accuracy of pitched ball anticipation. The second purpose was to examine transfer effects to a new pitcher. Twenty-eight varsity baseball players participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to an explicit instruction group, an implicit instruction group, or a control group. Forty-eight test trials and 72 perceptual training trials were administered on the first day of the experiment. On the second day, 48 test trials followed by 144 perceptual training trials were administered. The third day consisted of 48 test trials. The test consisted of evaluation of the pitch location, pitch type, and both pitch location and type. Anticipatory cues were introduced to the explicit instruction group only. Participants in the implicit instruction group were instructed to react intuitively. Participants in the control group performed only test trials. The results indicated that the level of awareness of anticipatory cues was significantly lower in the implicit instruction group than in the explicit instruction and control groups, whereas that in the explicit instruction group was significantly higher than in the control group. These findings suggest that instructions demanding an intuitive reaction inhibited awareness of anticipatory cues. Moreover, in both the explicit and implicit instruction groups, the speed of anticipation for pitch location and for both pitch location and pitch type were improved significantly by the 72 perceptual training trials, whereas no such change was observed in the accuracy of anticipation. No improvement in speed or accuracy was observed in the control group. These results indicate that explicit and implicit perceptual training yields similar improvements of anticipatory skills and different levels of awareness about anticipatory cues. No transfer effects were observed in this study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality and exercise experience. Personality traits were investigated using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R), which was developed on the basis of the five-factor model of personality. Another questionnaire was used to investigate exercise experience, including periods of exercise, exercise time per week, and competition performance in elementary school, junior high school, high school, and university. The answer to the questionnaires, collected from 392 university students (M=158, F=234), were analyzed for each of the five factors and 30 subcategories of NEO-PI-R using a stepwise multiple regression analysis with exercise experience factors as explanatory variables. The results showed that extraversion and conscientiousness factors and their subcategories were positively predicted by exercise experience variables regardless of sex, although neuroticism was negatively predicted by exercise experience variables in males. The subcategories of openness and agreeableness factors were predicted by exercise experience variables in both males and females, although some subcategories of openness had negative relationships with competition performance. An overall view of the analysis suggested that length of experience and competition performance were closely related to personality factors and subcategories in males, while the average amount of exercise and competition performance were closely related to personality variables in females. In addition, although there were many statistically significant relationships between personality and exercise experience variables, the coefficient of multiple determination (R2) varied between .014 and .099, suggesting that the explanatory rates of exercise experience variables for personality did not exceed 10%.

The first purpose of this study was to examine the influence of explicit and implicit instruction about anticipatory cues inherent in tennis player's movements on the conscious usage of the anticipatory cues. The second purpose was to examine transfer effects to a new player. Twentyone intermediate tennis players participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to an explicit instruction group, an implicit instruction group, or a control group. Anticipatory cues were introduced to the explicit instruction group only. Participants in the implicit instruction group were instructed to react intuitively. Participants in the control group performed only test trials. All participants anticipated courses of the opponent's serve and reacted as quickly and accurately as possible by pressing keys. The explicit and implicit instruction groups performed 20 test trials and 52 perceptual training trials on the first day. They had 20 test trials and 104 perceptual training trials on the second day. They also had 20 test trials on the third day. The results showed that the three groups did not improve their anticipatory skills. No transfer effect was observed in this study. Although levels of awareness of anticipatory cues were not significantly different among the three groups, contents of anticipatory cues were different. While the explicit instruction group used the anticipatory cues provided by the experimenter, the implicit instruction and control groups used anticipatory cues which were different from those provided to the explicit instruction group, suggesting that participants without explicit instruction tried to discover anticipatory cues by themselves.
