  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Research on Method to Construct Scalable Server Systems with Fault-Tolerance, In this study, we have made a new model and mechanism for distributed resource management in which there are fault-tolerance, efficiency, scalability, and migration-ability and we have developed an implementation of the model and the mechanism. In the research and development of the SSS-PC operating system, we had proposed a methodology to make one virtualized UNIX domain over multiple PC machines, and invented a scalable and migratable process mechanism. This study would lead the SSS-PCs research and development to the next stage. The following was achieved by the end of fiscal year 2006. The arbitrary pieces of UNIX domains could be established in one SSS-PC system over multiple PC machines. In addition, the fault-tolerant protocol stack communicated with one other party as three TCP protocol stacks cooperated in the SSS-PC system was developed. The fault-tolerant file server system using this protocol stack was experimentally implemented in the first half of fiscal year 2007. One file server program was redundantly executed with three PC machines, and the program used the fault-tolerant protocol stack to communicate external client terminals. In this situation, it was proven to keep providing service even if one of PC machines where the file server program was running broke down. However, it was clarified that the overlap of the name space in redundant execution became a problem through this experimental implementation. For the fundamental solution of the problem, it was concluded that it was necessary to treat each program of redundant execution as independent existence on the name space. Therefore, the execution method was switched to the method to achieve each program execution of redundant execution respectively on another virtualized UNIX domain, and virtualization mechanisms for UNIX domain was enhanced in the latter half of fiscal year 2007.
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Study on the Wide Area Resource Operation and Management for the Improvement of Network Safety and Reliability, The research is intended to show a Dynamic, Wide-area Resource Operation and Management Scheme for a Full-optical Networks, and the research also evaluates its performance improvement on safety and reliability of the network During the research period, we have conducted the followings;(1) Dynamic protection/restoration scheme for the full-optical network is proposed, and the efficiency of the resource utilization is shown.(2) The Path Computation Element (PM which is an integrated resource management entity is developed, and by conducting feasibility demonstration together with the photonic cross-connects (PXCs), optical transmission system and IP routers, significant improvement of safety, reliability and communication quality are shown.(3) The Border Model, which is our proposal for the control plane to make possible integration of IP and optical domain as well as the integration of IP layer and lower layers, is implemented on network components, and is the candidate to realize smooth integration of existing IP networks and future full-optical networks.(4) Major results of the study are published at internationally recognized societies and conferences.In the last year of the study, we have conducted the standardization effort for the NGN related standard development at the ITU-T and IETF. One of the fruit of the efforts is the acceptance of our concept in ID Management' standard which is one of the basic elements of the NGN management, as well as service development for Ubiquitous networks. Finally, we have concluded the study with the significant success and have presented the final report.
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(C)), Researches on the Architecture of Multi-Serviced Optical Networks which Enables the Quality of Service Provisioning, The purpose of this research is to study on the architecture of ultra high speed optical networks by focusing on the mechanisms that provide services with different quality levels through a common network platform, and propose efficient mechanisms for quality of service provisioning in optical networks. Towards this end, following studies have been carried out for two years.In Fiscal Year 2004, the first year of the research project, we have studied the mechanism for providing service differentiation in WDM based optical burst switching networks, which is a switching architecture proposed for the next generation optical networks. We have proposed wave-length scheduling algorithms that allocate wavelength to users based on their bandwidth usage during a certain period. In our algorithm, service differentiation is done by letting bursts in higher class preempt bursts in lower classes, or by dropping bursts which have over-usage of resources. Simulation results show that our schemes can provide efficient service differentiation in terms of burst loss rate, while burst preemption mechanism outperforms the non-preemptive one.In Fiscal Year 2005, we have developed the analytical methods for our proposed algorithms based on continuous Markov chain model. Comparison of the analytical results with simulations shows that our model is efficient when the burst length has Poisson distributions. Besides, we have studied on the mechanisms of providing absolute quality of service, which is another important feature for quality of service provisioning mechanisms. We proposed a preemption based burst scheduling algorithm that can guarantee the burst loss rate for classes with strict loss rate constraint. Our analytical and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient to provide loss guarantee for higher classes while suppress unnecessary drops for lower classes.The main contribution of this research is having adopted the quality of service provisioning notions and mechanisms into the new optical switching paradigm. Hopefully the outputs produced by this research will contribute as a part of the research and development of the new network architectures which enables the quality of service provisioning in high speed optical networks in the near future.
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(C)), Research on Clarifying and Control of the Characteristics of Internet Traffic Based on Monitored Traffic Data, As the fast growing network technology and services for a wide range of network applications, it is necessary to support a large variety of requirements for the quality of service in communication networks. The aim of this project is to study on characteristics and control methods of network traffic, based on traffic data and statistics monitored from real networks.Toward this end, we monitored on nodes of a wide area network and a local area network, obtained several series of traffic data traces. Through our analysis of these monitored traffic data, we evidenced the long-range dependence or so-called the self-similarity in traffic of both kinds of networks. Besides, a complex correlation property rather than the exact self-similarity was found: nearly a local Poisson property in short time scales and a strong correlation in long time scales. In order to predict the performance of traffic with such general correlation properties, we have proposed a method, which uses different fractional Brownian motion (FBM) processes to meat correlation properties in different time scales, and obtains a compound performance curve through these FBM processes. In our method, the performance in time scales with suddenly changed correlation property is considered by the compensation with another FBM process to slower the pace of the change of correlation properties. We have also found that traffic on wide area backbone networks has closer marginal distribution with Gaussian distribution than that on local area networks. And our method using multiple FBM process is proven to be more accurate for traffic with marginal distribution close to Gaussian distribution.The goal of this research has been achieved by the thorough investigation of the traffic characteristics of internet traffic, as well as the approaches for quality of service provisioning.
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Scalable IP Routing Control applied to Next-generation High-speed Internet, Many researches on IP router that plays primary role in the Internet, are now conducting to enhance high speed control ability, for examples realization of 10bps and 40Gbps control. Facing increase of backbone traffic due to rapid deployment of high-speed network accesses through competitive pricing to them and also facing popularization of use of Peer-to-Peer communications that, at least, hold 30% share of total traffic, backbone technology far next-generation should have enough cost performance than before. Such rapid change of Internet traffic is forcing to develop and deploy new innovative technologies based on optical communication and by introducing "Optical Cut-through" than conventional IP packet forwarding. Price trend in recent optical products would suggest the rightness of this solution.This research is intended to develop scalable next-generation Internet by proposing the architectural concept and also by verifying the feasibilities of full optical integration applied to future backbone. Researches include following topics;(1) Integrated control technology based on GMPLS (Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching) as well as feasibility demonstration using prototype network (which is first demonstration in worldwide), (2) 40Gbps 12ch multiplexed field trial with chromatic dispersion compensation, and, (3) feasibility demonstration of full optical 2R / 3R regenerative repeaterWith having academic evaluations to this research, we conclude the research with success by showing the concept and feasibility proven technologies applied to next-generation Internet.
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(国際学術研究), Studies on International Collaboration for Research Networking and International Coordination of Asia-Pacific Coutries, In recent years, research networks have extremely diversified, not only in developed coutries but also in newly developing contries and region, including mid and east europe, mid and south america, africa and asian coutries. As the result, international coordination among research networks is of important to establish international communication links. The CCIRN (Coordination Committee for Intercontinental Research Networks) plays primary role of such coordination. In addition to this, need for braodband communiation links is emphasized in order ato stimulate higher end researches. In this context, the CCIRN is now discussing how to interwork such broadband communication links and networks.United States had lauched new interconnecting point among broadband networks in Chikago, IL., which is called STAR-TAP (Science, Technology and Research, Transit Access Point). Investigators joined to the study have made international cooperation activities during three years, and finally made success to interconnected japanese boradbnad network (SINET) to STAR-TAP in October, 1997.European Commuinity has also put in operation of braodband research network (TEM-34). SINET has been cooperating to european resarch networks for three years, and consequently SINET has changed its connection point to TEM-34 PoP (Point of Presence) to London, UK.Circuit to London will be in operation from early April, 1998. That is second result of the study.Beside the actual interconnection, investigators have been contributing international standardization at IETF on ATM based networking. Several proposals which are now available as Internet Drafts, including ATM address resolution scheme, ATM inteconnection control information and high-performance protocol sepcifications, are proposed from the study.These activities are evaluated as future basis for international connection of research networks.
