Research Grants & Projects

  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Descriptive Research of Non-normative Forms in Modern Korean, There are a lot of irregular conjugation verb in Korean. The normal(correct) forms of these are defined by the National Institute, but in fact non-normal forms have been used quite often. In this research, we investigated actual usage of such non-normal forms. Specifically, we gathered examples of non-normal forms from the corpus and examined what kind of patterns there are. Then, after that, we conducted a questionnaire survey on 322 Korean native speakers and asked them actual usage for 223 utility forms of 50 words. As a result, in every pattern, non-normal forms are widely used beyond our expectation.
  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Development and application of dictionary for Korean morphological analyzer, For this research project, we used the open source morphological analysis engine, MeCab, to build a dictionary for analyzing the modern Korean language, and to develop and release tools for use in research and education. For this research, we built a morphological analysis-use dictionary from approximately 105,000 registered items. The dictionary that we built is able to be used through online tools and is available to the public on the internet as open source software.
  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Development and spread of Korean CALL materials creation techniques, We held several short courses with the purpose of investigating tools for developing and using Korean CALL(Computer-Assisted Language Learning) materials and practical methods for their creation, as well as for disseminating them. In addition, we actually developed Korean CALL materials that could be mainly used through Internet browsers and presented them. Some of the learning materials allow teachers to freely add and edit questions, making it possible for teachers to customize questions for their students.
