    近年、人為的介入の低下によって環境質が低下し、生態系サービスの湧出量が減少する問題が発生している。本研究は、こうした過少利用問題の中から１）有蹄類の獣肉の活用可能性、２）未利用有機排出物の養殖での活用可能性、３）野生個体を見ることに対する人々の選好調査をテーマに選んで研究をおこなった。研究成果として、１）獣肉の利用が進まない理由の1つが価格が高いことやブランドの差別化が不十分なこと、２）マレーシアの魚を事例として、有機廃棄物の利用がコストの削減につながりうること、３）野生個体の方が選好は高いものの、見れない場合は飼育個体の方が好まれる可能性があることが示された。

    本研究では、第一に、既存の自然資源管理モデルを、過少利用問題が扱える形に拡張した。第二に、個体数の大きさに依存しない指標を作り、ラトビア国の狩猟獣に実証的に適用した。第三に、有蹄類の増加による植生改変を安価かつ簡易に防止する方法を提案し、フィールド調査で有効性を確認した。第四に、ラトビア国で過少利用が発生しているビーバーの生態的パラメータの推定をおこなった。第五に、ハイイロオオカミの日本への再導入の可能性を検討した。第六に、ハンター維持政策の実現可能性を検討した。

    自然資本は、それぞれ固有の構造と機能そしてダイナミズムを持ち、我々をその中で生かし、また様々な日々の活動の基礎をなし、我々の生活を深く規定している。近年、グロ―バリゼーションの急激な進展をはじめとして、この自然資本を取り巻く状況はますます変化し、解決が必要とされる課題はさらに増えつづけている。本研究では、自然資本の臨界性を定式化し、操作可能な概念として鍛え上げ、この概念を導きの糸とし、必要な政策手段や活動を論じ、さらにそれをいかに改善させていくかを明らかにした。
