[Refereed] Hangul(Hangeul) is a script created (designed) by “Sejong,” the fourth king of Joseon. This writing was published on November 4, 1443.and originally published in a document called Hunmin Jeong-eum. It is one of the newest writing systems and the only one for which we can know the exact year of creation in the world. However, Hangul was rarely used in Korea because of some interventions by neighboring countries. It is said that Hangul started to be used as the Korean national writing system approximately 70 years ago. That is why there are no examples where people have applied Hangul to something except as a communication tool. Recently, a movement has started to increase in popularity among artists in Korea.
These artists are trying to use Hangul in art or as an industrial tool the same as the English alphabet, or Japanese Hiragana and Katakana. I had some opportunities to think back about my national character through my life in Japan and make patterns inspired by Hangul. As a result of my visit to Japan, I naturally had more opportunities to look at Hangul, my native language, with new concepts and perspectives, and I began to conduct research and produce works based on Korean writing.
In this study, after investigating the history of letters and Hangul, we propose a letter pattern design that takes advantage of the graphic and geometric characteristics of Hangul. And the purpose of this is to explore the utility and design value of Hangul.
