Abstract This research utilised eye tracking to examine the vocabulary coping strategies and dictionary skills of Japanese English learners in task-based reading. Participants had access to an online dictionary with four definitions per word, including three inapplicable definitions. The interplay and outcomes of reading strategies and dictionary skills were investigated. The research found that performance was not statistically different compared to previous research where participants had access to a dictionary with only the applicable definition. Given the more difficult dictionary, participants more often made regressions to investigate the context in the text, but they did not reduce their dictionary use. Most participants lacked strategic competence while reading, but they demonstrated competence in dictionary skills. In rare instances of failed dictionary use, readers usually had not inspected the context cues in the text. For task-relevant words, participants who re-read context cues and then used the dictionary performed better. Implications for educators and materials developers are discussed.

Since April 2019, the researchers finished one research project that had been already started. In addition, we started and finished a new study exactly as planned.
Together, this has led to 3 articles in refereed journals. The latest acceptance (pending minor revisions) was in TESOL Quarterly, which is the most well known TESOL journal. To be accepted by the strict reviewers for a full length article in this journal shows the quality of our research project. The research was also recently published in two of the most well-know second language reading journals: The Reading Matrix and Reading in a Foreign Language.
The results were also presented at two international conferences, including the largest eye tracking conference in the world.

The first half of the year went well with one study successfully completed using new equipment. One study from the previous year was published in Reading in a Foreign Language Journal in October 2019 titled "Selective attention of L2 learners in task-based reading online". A study that was completed in the latter half of the previous year was also accepted to be published in April 2020 in Reading Matrix Journal titled "Online Research Strategies of L2 Readers: Evaluating Strategic Competence through Mixed Methods". The study completed in the first half of this year was submitted as a full paper and received good feedback with minor changes needed in TESOL Quarterly. This paper should be published in the coming year. We presented at the European Conference in Eye Movements in Alicante, Spain in August 2019 and Prichard presented at Professionals & Research in Applied Linguistics Conference in Lyon France (PRELA 2019). We were accepted to present our findings at 2 international conferences in the Netherlands and Japan, but unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic they have both been cancelled. Equipment issues that have caused us great problems in the past have largely been overcome due to greater awareness of the limitations of the equipment and the purchase of a much more capable eye-tracker with funds from another Kaken grant.

The project produced some interesting and useful insights into the reading strategy use of Japanese learners of English, although from the start we were limited and disappointed by the performance of the equipment that we were able to purchase with the funding. We were able to publish our results in two respected international journals and presented our findings at domestic and international conferences across a range of academic fields from English Language Teaching to Eye-Movement. Overall we found that in the tasks that we used when conducting experiments, all but the highest ability students failed to read in a strategic manner. This was mainly for tasks to assess selective attention in reading that included reading to write a summary and reading to find specific information within an online text.
