Sense of self-agency (perceived control) has been proposed in psychology field, and it is the sense that “I am the initiator or source of the action”. In this study, psychological experiments using a simple driving simulator, adding auditory information as one of multimodalities assumed support of visual processing, were conducted and then elicited how operator’s sense of self-agency changes corresponding to a degree of consistency between time-series waveforms of operation and of auditory information. The result suggested that noise and signal could be redefined from the view point of the sense of self-agency toward noise and vibration of vehicle-body design.

Sense of self-agency has been proposed in psychology field, and it is the sense that I am the initiator or source of the action. Human perception should be considered to design a better interface, so that sense of agency is spotlighted in ergonomics and robotics interface design field. In previous study we concluded that sense of agency is affected by both of a noise and a delay in the case of an operation between an action (input signal) and its effect (output signal). In this study we tested the sense in the situation that required multiple inputs like car driving operation. We considered that the behavior of sense of agency by each of a noise and a delay for each of multiple input. The knowledge may be applicable to an interface required complex operations.

Embodiment in human–vehicle interaction is higher for perceived safety than for perceived risk. When operational anticipations are violated, experiencing a vehicle as body-extension is negatively correlated with operational effort as indicated by neural activation in the motor system.

Prediction of drowsiness based on an objective measure is demanded in machine and vehicle operations, in which human error may cause fatal accidents. Recently, we focused on the pupil which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, easily and non-invasively observable from the outside of the body.Prior to the large low frequency pupil-diameter fluctuation, which is known to associate with drowsiness, a Gradual Miosis was observed in most subjects. During this miosis period, the subjects were not yet aware of their drowsiness. We have developed a software system which automatically detects the Gradual Miosis in real time.

The virtual scissors using virtual hands we propose enable users can cut virtual paper with their own hands. One purpose of our proposal is to facilitate implementing different tools simply by changing software parameters. Another is to make a general-purpose system with small-scale input and output devices for general applications, e.g., only using thin haptic information and force feedback. With such virtual reality (VR) scissors, we introduced feedback to cover any impressions such as interface interference during use. We evaluated whether an interaction occurred between vibration feedback and sound effects. Using this system, we found that users could manipulate virtual scissors through a data-glove similar to the use of real ones.

We investigated how hemodynamics in the brain behave using NIRS (Near Infrared Spectroscopy) while man using tool. The tools in our experiment were a pair of real scissors and virtual reality scissors. Such a virtual reality technology allows amount of feedback information to change. We tested with five male-subjects, right-handed. The results showed that when amount of feedback information, which was generated during cutting, was richer, the hemodynamics change of oxygenated hemoglobin was greater in prefrontal area of left hemisphere. This observation means that it is necessary to process integration of motor and sensory information during operation with tool in order to feel "reality".

Prediction of drowsiness based on an objective measure is demanded in machine and vehicle operations in which human errors may cause fatal accidents. Currently we focused on the pupil of the eye which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and easily observable non-invasively from the outside of the body. We employed uneventful driving simulation to induce drowsiness of human subjects, and an anti-saccade task to evaluate their cognitive and motor performance. First we confirmed that pupil diameter fluctuates with large amplitude at low frequencies when the subject is aware of his/her drowsiness as reported previously. During this period, the latency of anti-saccade initiation was elongated and varied. We then found that prior to this fluctuation, pupil diameter decreases gradually in most subjects, and they were not aware of sleepiness during this period. We conclude that this monotonic gradual miosis can be a reliable premonitor of drowsiness.

Driving an automobile is an example of a goal-directed activity with high complexity in which different behavioral elements have to be integrated and brought into a sequential order. On the basis of the reafference principle and experimental results on temporal perception and cognitive control, we propose a hierarchical model of driving behavior, which can also be adapted to other goal-directed activities. Driving is conceived of as being controlled by anticipatory neuronal programs if these programs are disrupted by unpredictable stimuli, which require an instantaneous reaction, behavioral control returns after completion of the reactive mode to the anticipatory mode of driving. In the model different levels of anticipation windows are distinguished which, however, are interconnected, in a bi-directional way: (a) Strategic level with a representation of the driving activity from the beginning to reaching the final goal (b) Segmented tactical level with the sequence of necessary milestones to reach the goal (c) Maneuver level where actions like passing another car or keeping a lane are controlled (d) Short-term integration level of a few seconds which allows immediate anticipations and (e) Synchronization level for sensorimotor control and complexity reduction within neuronal assemblies. A flow diagram schematically describes different driving situations stressing the anticipatory mode of control. In a pilot experiment with 20 subjects using a virtual driving situation in a car simulator predictions of the model could be verified, i.e., subjects showed a significant preference for the anticipatory mode of driving. © 2006 Marta Olivetti Belardinelli and Springer-Verlag.

The results of various braking tests conducted on a test course using actual vehicles have shown that driver heart rates during braking reflect the psychological state at that time. Experimental conditions simulating a vehicle appearing suddenly from the side were created, and drivers encountering this situation were to step on the brake pedal immediately. As a result, a rapid increase in driver heart rates was confirmed at this time. On the other hand, when approaching a curve, driver heart rates started to increase even before entering the curve. Thus, it was inferred that there are driver heart rate change patterns unique to braking, and that panic braking can be identified from the degree of tenseness. Therefore, the authors devised a formula for characterizing panic braking using the difference in the size of the heart rate acceleration response before and after stepping on the brake pedal, and then investigated this formula.
