This paper examines the determinants of the demand for female workers, focusing on the role of information and communication technology (ICT) and offshoring. Estimating a system of variable factor demands for manufacturing industries between 1980 and 2011, we find that, whereas the ICT capital stock has significantly positive effects on the demand for low-, middle-high-, and high-skilled female workers, it has significantly negative effects on the demand for middle-low-skilled female workers. This paper examines the effects of information and communication technology (ICT) and offshoring on the skill demand in Japanese manufacturing. One of the contributions of this paper is that we focus explicitly on the demand for low-wage part-time workers, which we call low skilled workers. Estimating a system of variable factor demands for the period 1980-2011, we find that industries with higher ICT stock shifted demand from middle-low to middle-high and low skilled workers. Offshoring is associated with the increasing demand for high skilled workers but it has insignificant effects on the demand for middle-high, middle-low, and low skilled workers. The results together suggest that the increasing demand for low-wage part-time workers can be attributable to ICT in Japan. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. This paper aims to investigate the structure and the determinants of the trade of products manufactured by small- and medium-sized enterprises. For this purpose, a trade database for selected SME-based industries is prepared. Analyzing this database, the following three findings are obtained. First, firms in SME-based industries are facing a large inflow of imported goods, while the volume of their exports is relatively small.Secondly, the share of Asian countries is larger in the trade of SME products than overall trade. Thirdly, the gravity model can be applied for the trade of SME products. In some cases, distance and difference of income level tend to be more sensitive for SME products than overall trade. This paper analyzes the changes of economic institution of Sweden in association with the integration into the European Single Market from two aspects. One aspect involves the change of economic institution in order to introduce the main function of the European Single Market, that is to say, the four freedoms. The other aspect is the change induced by the harmonization of Swedish system to EU system on the condition to the integration. The analysis revealed that these changes affected Swedish economy and companies as follows. First, free movement of goods, services, and capital lowered the barriers for Swedish companies to expand their business overseas. Secondly, capital inflows increased after the deregulation of capital market. It changed the ownership structure of Swedish companies drastically. Thirdly, institutional reforms for harmonization made Swedish market more open and efficient. This paper analyses the intra-industry trade and intra-industry division of labour in Swedish machinery industry trade with 25 countries. Intra-industry division of labour arises from trade of intermediate goods. We measure the degree of intra-industry division, and the ratio of intra-industry division to intra-industry trade. Using these indices, we analyse regional and sectoral pattern of intra-industry trade and division.
Grubel-Lloyd index shows that intra-industry division of labour is an important factor of intra-industry trade. The analysis within the framework of the gravity model of trade shows that intra-industry trade and division of labour is positively related to the size of country, negatively related to the distance between two country and dissimilarity of income. In Swedish case, GL index of intra-industry division is higher with the European countries than with the non-European countries, and higher with developed countries than with developing countries.
In addition, the results of GL index and regression reveal the difference in industrial sectors. The intra-industry trade and division of metal working machinery sector, which tends to regionally concentrate, is higher with countries in the same region than other industrial sectors.
