    Detecting the slip using the acoustic emission (AE) technique is useful for condition-monitoring of machinery and equipment. However, the characteristics of the AE signals at the onset of a slip are insufficiently clarified. We conducted friction tests and simultaneously measured the AE signal, friction, and relative displacement of a brass ball in contact with a flat steel plate. The AE signal clearly increased during the slip, and the effective value of the AE signal well-mimicked the sliding speed. In a frequency analysis of the AE signals, the characteristic frequency components increased significantly during the slip. From the obtained data, we also calculated the AE energy and the friction work during the slip. Both values shared a strong proportional relationship.

    Numerical and experimental analyses were carried out to investigate the static characteristics of liquid annular seals with helical grooves in a seal stator. In the numerical analysis, the momentum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, which were averaged across the film thickness, were numerically solved to obtain the leakage flow rate and the pressure distributions in the seal clearance. To accurately define the location of the step between the groove and the land regions in the calculation domain, these governing equations were expressed using an oblique coordinate system in which the directions of coordinate axes coincided with the circumferential direction and the direction along the helical grooves. The numerical analysis included the effects of both fluid inertia and energy loss due to expansion during the passage of fluid from the land region to the helical groove region and that due to contraction from the groove region to the land region. In the experimental analysis, the leakage flow rate and the fluid-film pressure distributions in the seal clearance were measured for the helically grooved seals with different helix angles of the helical groove. The numerical results of leakage flow rate and pressure distributions agree reasonably with the experimental results, which demonstrates the validity of the numerical analysis. The leakage flow rate of the helically grooved seals was influenced by two factors: fluid energy loss during passage through the step between the groove and the land, and the pumping effect by which the spinning motion of the rotor pushes the flow back upstream along the helical grooves. Under a low range of rotor spinning velocity, the leakage flow rate decreased with helix angle because the effect of fluid energy loss in the steps was significant. By contrast, under a high range of spinning velocity, the quantitative difference in the leakage flow rate due to the helix angle decreased compared to that under a low range because the reduction in the leakage flow rate due to the pumping effect was pronounced for a larger helix angle. The effects of helix angle and rotor spinning velocity on the leakage flow rate are explained qualitatively using a simplified model.

    Numerous previous numerical studies have investigated the effect of surface texturing upon the static characteristics of journal bearings, including their load-carrying capacity and friction torque. In general, the dynamic characteristics of journal bearings are also important, since they are essential factors in predicting the vibration behavior of actual rotors supported by journal bearings. However, the effects of surface texture upon these dynamic characteristics have not been investigated through either numerical or experimental analysis. Thus, in the present study, such analyses were conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of textured journal bearings, such as their dynamic coefficients of oil film and the stability-threshold shaft speed supported by the bearings. Numerical analysis was done using a model that included inertial effects and energy loss; this model agreed well with experimental results concerning static characteristics from our previous study. Dynamic testing based on a sinusoidal-excitation method was also performed using textured, journal bearings with uniform square dimples to verify the numerical results, which agreed qualitatively with those, of experiment, confirming the validity of the numerical analysis. These results suggest that under the same, operating conditions, the main effect of texturing upon the dynamic coefficients is to yield the cross- coupled stiffness coefficients with lower absolute values than the conventional ones with a smooth surface. The linear stability-threshold shaft speed of the rotor supported, by the textured journal bearings became higher than that of a smooth bearing, mainly due to the reduction of cross-coupled stiffness coefficients. This tendency became more pronounced for high Reynolds number operating conditions and textured bearings with a large number of dimples.

    Surface texturing is a technique for improving frictional and hydrodynamic performances of journal bearings because microtextures can serve as reservoirs for oil or traps for debris and may also generate hydrodynamic pressure. Over the past two decades, many researchers have experimentally demonstrated that texturing of various tribological elements can reduce friction force and wear, contributing to improvement of lubrication performance. Some numerical studies have examined the hydrodynamic lubrication conditions and reported that surface texturing affects the static characteristics of journal bearings, such as their load carrying capacity and friction torque. However, the validity of these numerical models has not been confirmed because of a lack of experimental studies. This study proposes a numerical model that includes both inertial effects and energy loss at the edges of dimples on the surface of a journal bearing in order to investigate the bearing's static characteristics. Experimental verification of journal bearings is also conducted with a uniform square-dimple pattern on their full-bearing surface. The results obtained by the model agree well with those of experiment, confirming the model's validity. These results show that under the same operating conditions, textured bearings yield a higher eccentricity ratio and lower attitude angle than the conventional ones with a smooth surface. This tendency becomes more marked for high Reynolds number operating conditions and for textured bearings with a large number of dimples.

    This paper shows the stability characteristics of a flexible rotor supported in three types of multi-lobe bearings, i.e. 2-lobe bearings, 3-lobe bearings and 4-lobe bearings, and tilting pad journal bearings theoretically. Angular spring and angular damping coefficients of oil film of the bearings are calculated and the effects of the preload factor on the coefficients are discussed. With a Jeffcott rotor model considering the angular spring and angular damping coefficients, stability charts are made under the wide range of operating conditions, and show that 2-lobe bearings with a high preload factor cover much larger stable region in the stability charts than the other bearings, and 3-lobe bearings, 4-lobe bearings and tilting pad journal bearings with line contact pivots do not have special advantages in comparison with 2-lobe bearings. From the results, it is concluded that 2-lobe bearings with a high preload factor are most suitable for supporting the flexible rotor.

    This paper studies the static and dynamic characteristics of tilting-pad journal bearings (TPJBs) with the load directions different from either of the two typical load directions of LOP (Load On Pad) and LBP (Load Between Pads). Theoretical results show that the effects of the load direction on the static and dynamic characteristics are found in the range of low Sommerfeld number S and increase with the decrease of S. The cross-coupling terms of spring and damping coefficients are no longer zero if the load direction is different from LOP and LBP, but the cross-coupling spring coefficients are equal, which indicates that the non-zero cross-coupling terms of the spring coefficients do not cause the self-excited vibration.

    The static characteristics of journal bearings with an axial groove under starved lubrication are studied theoretically and a lubrication condition map is newly proposed. This map is represented using the contour map of the eccentricity ratio with the Sommerfeld number S in the horizontal axis and the dimensionless oil flow rate Qsup externally supplied in the vertical axis for the wide range of the operating conditions. It is found from the map that the eccentricity ratio increases with the decrease of Qsup. This tendency is more marked for a higher Sommerfeld number. Journal center loci show that the attitude angle decreases with Qsup. The degree of the starvation Λ and the oil supply rate Ψ are defined as the ratio of the dimensionless oil flow rate into the inlet of the oil film region to that obtained under the flooded lubrication condition and as the ratio of Qsup to Qsup* obtained under flooded lubrication conditions, respectively. The degree of starvation Λ varies with Ψ and the value of Λ can be determined by setting the value of Ψ. These facts suggest that the static characteristics and Λ are theoretically predicted once the value of Qsup or Ψ is determined.

    This paper shows the effect of angular spring and angular damping coefficients of oil film on the stability characteristics of an elastic rotor supported in circular journal bearings. A theoretical Jeffcott rotor model considering the angular spring and angular damping coefficients are constructed, and stability threshold speeds and stability margin were calculated under wide operating conditions. Comparing to the model neglecting the angular spring and angular damping coefficients, the angular spring and angular damping coefficients do not affect on the stability of the rotor-bearing system when the stiffness of the rotating shaft is high. On the other hand, when the shaft is very flexible, Sommerfeld number at the stability threshold speed increases, indicating the angular spring and angular damping coefficients improve the stability of the rotor-bearing system.

    We propose a new approximation method, which calculates shearing forces of a liquid meniscus bridge between parallel plates with small clearance, and discuss the effect of three geometrical parameters, the volume of the bridge, clearance of the planes, and contact angle, on the shearing forces. The method introduces the nonaxisymmetry of the liquid meniscus-bridge by permitting the change of the contact angle on the triple lines, and thereby the calculated shearing forces increase with the shearing distance in the region of lower shearing distance. Experiments were carried out to measure the spring constants of the meniscus bridge in the shearing direction, and showed that the experimental results agreed with the calculated ones qualitatively. Moreover, the shape of the liquid meniscus bridge under shear is consistent with the assumptions of the approximation method. Shearing forces increased with both the volume of the liquid meniscus bridge and the contact angle or with the decrease of clearance.

    The theoretical and experimental study is carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the liquid annular seals with a square-hole pattern in seal stator. The mometum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, which are averaged across the film thickness, are numerically solved in consideration of the pressure jumps at each step between the land and the square-hole regions. This pressure discontinuity is evaluated based on the continuity of volume flow rate across each step and the generalized Bernoulli equation. The numerical results of the dynamic fluid force and the dynamic coefficients agree well with the experimental results, which prove the validity of the numerical analysis. The effects of the inlet swirl velocity on the dynamic coefficients and the whirl-frequency ratio are also described for the square-hole pattern seal as well as the annular plain seal with smooth surface and the parallel-grooved seal.

    The theoretical and experimental study is carried out to investigate the static characteristics of the liquid annular seals with a square-hole pattern in seal stator. The momentum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, which are averaged across the film thickness, are numerically solved to obtain the pressure distributions in the seal clearance and the leakage flow rate. Semi-empirical pressure jump coefficients are used for evaluation of both pressure jumps due to the expansion at the passage of the fluid from the land to the square-hole region and the contraction from the square-hole to the land region. The numerical results of the pressure distribution and the leakage flow rate agree well with the experimental results, which proves the validity of the numerical analysis. The pressures decrease in the axial direction and their distribution has periodical unevenness due to the square-hole pattern in the seal stator. The square-hole pattern seal as well as the parallel-grooved annular seal yields a lower leakage flow rate than conventional seals with smooth surfaces. This reduction of the leakage flow rate is attributed to the pressure jump phenomena with energy loss induced by the axial flow passage across each step between the land and the square-hole region.

    The theoretical and experimental study is carried out to investigate the squeeze film penomena between a cylindrical porous block and an impermeable rigid plate. The porous rubber block is rotated and oscillated sinusoidally in the direction perpendicular to its surface, whereas the rigid plate is stationary. The deformation of the porous rubber block is evaluated with an approximate method, in which the cylindrical rubber block is simplified to be a set of concentric rings and each ring is assumed to be deformed only axially and independently from the neighboring ones. The each ring can be replaced a three-element viscoelastic model. The theoretical result agrees approximately with the experimental result and both results show that a rotational motion slightly decreases the squeeze film pressure and force due to a centrifugal force mainly acting on the film. The effects of the permeability of the porous matrix, the velocity slip at the porous surface and the surface deformation of the porous matrix on the squeeze film characteristics are made clear by comparing the results for the squeeze film between the porous rubber surface and the impermeable rigid surface with those between a pair of impermeable rigid plates.

    This paper studies the stability characteristics of tilting-pad journal bearings theoretically and experimentally. A tilting-pad journal bearing floating on a rotating rigid shaft was found to turn unstable beyond threshold shaft speeds, whirling with a subsynchronous frequency in the conical mode. The threshold shaft speeds were theoretically obtained for various operating conditions with the angular stiffness coefficients and the angular damping coefficients of the oil film due to the tilt motion of the bearing being considered. The predictions were found to agree well with measurements qualitatively. This unstable vibration of the bearing results from the cross-coupling terms of the angular stiffness coefficients much larger than the direct terms at higher Sommerfeld number. The threshold speeds were found to be insensitive to the variations of preload factor, which is contrary to the case of the parallel mode oil whip.

    This paper shows the effect of ultrathin lubricant films between sliding bodies on acoustic emission (AE) signals induced by the sliding friction and discusses the application of the AE techniques to the monitoring of the lubricant films. Experiments were conducted with a ball-on-disk friction tester to measure the AE signals. The ball was a glass ball of 5mm diameter. The disk was a magnetic disk with a DLC protective layer on its surface, and was coated with PFPE Z-dol 4000 about 1.5nm thick. The noticeable AE envelope signals were induced by the local decrease in the mobile layer at the initial stage of the friction test, and then the magnitude of AE envelope signals increased with the decrease of both the mobile and the bonded layers. The AE map, which is a cascade graph of the AE envelope signals measured in time order, was proposed to monitor the time variation of the spatial distribution of PFPE film thickness, and showed that the mobile layer moved to the direction of friction.

    This paper shows the effect of ultrathin lubricant films between sliding bodies on Acoustic Emission (AE) signals induced by the sliding friction. Experiments were conducted with a ball-on-disk friction tester to measure the friction coefficient, the raw AE signals and the root-mean-squarevalues of the AE signals (the AErms signals). The ball was a glass ball of 5mm diameter. The disk was a magnetic disk used for 2.5 inch HDD with a DLC protective layer on its surface, and was coated with PFPE Z-dol 4000 about 1.5nm thick. The AErms signals kept a low level for some time after the start of the test, and then increased. Its time variation was similar to that of friction coefficient. After the friction test, the circumferential distribution of the lubricant film thickness was measured with an ellipsometer. The distribution demonstrated the reduction of the lubricant film thickness at the circumferential position where the magnitude of AE signals became large. These facts showed that the AE signals correlated well with the lubricant film thickness. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

    This work discusses acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of bilayered molecular films (BMFs), which consist of a mobile lubricant monolayer and a bonded one. The AE effective value was measured with a ball-on-disk friction tester and correlated well with the friction coefficient Moreover, from the observation of the AE signals, we found that the amplitude of the AE signals increased periodically - whose period was identical to the disk revolution - and the time region with high amplitude extended with running time. This suggests that BMF wear occurs on a small part of the disk And then expands to the whole. From these results, we considered that the AE measurement applies to the condition monitoring of BMFs. © 2005 by Allerton Press, Inc.

The AE effective value was measured with a ball-on-disk friction tester, and was correlated well with the friction coefficient Moreover, from the observation of the AE signals, it was found that the amplitude of the AE signals increased periodically, whose period was identical to the disk revolution, and the time region with high amplitude extended with running time. This suggests that the wear of BMFs occurs at a small part on the disk, and then expands to the whole. From these results, it was considered that the AE measurement is applicable to the condition monitoring of BMFs.

    This paper reports an experimental and theoretical study on the stability of an elastic rotor supported in tilting-pad journal bearings, with two different types of bearing support, that is, the simple bearing support and the fixed bearing support. The former allows the bearings to tilt in the housing, following the dynamic tilt motion of the journal due to shaft whirling in the elastic shaft bending mode and resulting in negligibly small amount of the oil film moment acting on the journal. On the other hand, the latter does not allow the tilt motion of the bearings, generating significant amount of the oil film moment acting on the journal. The rotor with the fixed bearing support was found experimentally to turn unstable at higher shafts speeds, while that with the simple bearing support remained stable throughout the experiments conducted. A newly derived theoretical model corresponding to the case of the fixed bearing support was found to explain the stability behaviour observed in the experiments.

Stability charts for a rigid rotor supported in tilting-pad journal bearings are obtained with a full set of linear rotordynamic coefficients, and the effects of preload factor, pad inertia and load direction on the stability are discussed. Tilting-pad journal bearings with low preload factor are found to cause oil whip even if pad inertia is negligibly small. Pad inertia lowers the stability threshold, and load direction affects the shape of the unstable operation regions in the stability charts.

    摺動面のトライボロジー特性改善の手法として表面テクスチャリングが知られている.本研究の目的は,機械加工で生産される高精度で複雑な部品の表面に,高い機能性を有するマイクロテクスチャを,超音波切削加工によって整列配置して創成する技術の開発である.切削工具の振動状態を超音波周波数に比して充分に高速,かつ被削材送り運動に対して高精度に同期させることで,ピッチ数~数十μm,深さ数μmの整列配置されたマイクロテクスチャを工作機械で創成するシステムを構築する.切削による成形仕上げ加工と同時にテクスチャリングできるので,生産性を落とすことなく機能性表面を創成できる点が大きな特長である. 今年度は、超音波励振信号の発振タイミングを主軸回転角と同期するよう補正することで,テクスチャ配列を制御するシステムを提案した.超音波帯域(28kHz)の交番電圧の位相を制御するため,超音波振動の周期(36マイクロ秒)に比して十分に短い制御周期が要求される.ここでは,FPGAを用いて,制御システムを構築した.加工されたテクスチャのピッチは,理論値である切削ピッチPth = 47.8μm,送りピッチFth = 30μmと一致し,本手法によるテクスチャ創成が可能であることを確認できた.ピッチ間隔に対する理想的な整列状態からの位置ずれをテクスチャ配列のずれと定義した.テクスチャの切削方向の位置ずれはテクスチャの重心位置から近似直線を求め,重心位置と近似直線との差の平均(N=25~45)として算出した.補正を行わない場合,テクスチャは様々なパラメータ変動によってランダムな配置となり,配列のずれは16.6%であった.一方,超音波振動の位相補正によって,格子配列は整列配置され,ずれは 3.0%となり,本手法の有効性が確認できた.今後は,テクスチャの整列配置がトライボロジ特性に与える影響を実験的に検証する.
