[査読有り] Within the framework of the current Minimalist Program, syntactic derivation and externalization of relative constructions in Japanese and English are discussed. Based on the analysis proposed by Akahane (2021), which suggests that a coordinate structure is involved in the syntactic derivation as well as in the semantic interpretation of English restrictive relative constructions, this study shows that the basic features of both head-external and head-internal relative constructions in Japanese can be captured in a unified way. For externalization of these structures, an explanation using FormSequence proposed by Chomsky (2021) is employed. As for the differences between Japanese and English relative constructions, it is shown that the adjacency condition on affixation and the [Final] feature assigned to lexical items play important roles. In addition, other English constructions that can be compared to the Japanese head-internal relative constructions are also briefly discussed.
