This paper is comparative study with previous study to verify 20 years change of Chowringhee district (Kolkata, India), past European residential area of colonial Calcutta. The primary purpose is to clarify how the area has changed, mainly focusing on the renewal (reconstruction, extension and renovation) of buildings, and the combine or sub-division of the site. The grand purpose of this paper is to discuss how to evaluate the colonial heritage of the Western powers left in the big cities around the world, and how to utilize the historical blocks maintained in the urban core of the colonial cities.

This paper discusses the space formation and transformation of the urban tissue of Old Delhi. Main focuses are the street system, neighbourhood blocks, the distribution of public, religious and commercial facilities and the distribution of religious communities. Based on field research within the south-western area of Jama Masjid, the authors found a hierarchy in the street system. There are 1. Major roads (Bazaar), 2. Smaller public streets, 3. Narrow lanes within residential blocks, and 4. Dead-end alleys. Narrow lanes and dead-end lanes within residential blocks are called kuchas, galis or katras. Each kucha, gali or katra has its own name and forms a neighbourhood block. In some places a larger neighbourhood quarter called a mohalla is formed by neighbouring kuchas, galis and katras. Religious facilities for Muslims (mosques, dargahs) and Hindus (mandirs, shrines) are distributed separately. This means that Muslim and Hindu communities were also separated. However, the distribution of religious facilities shown in the 19(th) century maps of Shahjahanabad indicates that these communities were previously mixed to a greater extent than they are today.

Native Town is past "Black Town" that was established as a bazaar area for indigenous merchants and craftsmen. At Native Town in Bombay, there are numerous accumulations of Chawls. The Chawl, built by speculative developers, to accommodate increasing population, is particular rent room housing complex with minimum component, which characterizes housing system of the city. From our field survey, we can find preservation of original environment of living and its typology of floor plan. There are several basic types, and the rest could be explained with combination of the basic plan. In contrast, Chawl preserves traditional living style, and the area keeps some characteristics of indigenous customs. We can find a feature of the area from combination of Chawl, as pioneer mass-housing, with traditional social formation of the area.

The "Native Town", the former "Black Town", was first established as a bazaar area for indigenous merchants and craftsman. Now packed with "chawls", multi-storied apartment blocks with shops on the ground floor, it still shows clear traits of the original spatial grouping in accordance with the occupants' religion, cast/business (Jati) and home countries, which coincided with the segregation principle under the British rule. However, a close look at the overlaid survey data as to the attributes of the present property owners, business owners, their employees and inhabitants of all of the blocks in the two typical quarters of the Town also shows distinct deviation from the original setting. The systems that barely maintain the long standing sub-communities can be concluded to be the remains of the "Jati" system and the unique form of tenure of chawls, but the modern stresses causing changes in property ownership, businesses and the family structure are now undermining the stability of the spatial composition of the Town.

In 19th century , Modern Buddhism was an arena that connected whole Buddhist world consists of South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. This study focused on Modern Buddhism architecture which shows idea of Modern Buddhism through physical shape. Major target cities of this study were Colombo, Kolkata, Yangon, Bangkok, Singapore and Kyoto. These cities were hub cities on Modern Buddhism movement in the 19th century Asia. This study clarified each city’s historical formation of Modern Buddhism architecture and transformation of urban landscape through construction of Modern Buddhism architecture. At the same time, this study clarified influences of contemporary interactions between these cities on formation of Modern Buddhism architecture. Dynamisms of Modern Buddhism architecture give us some perspective on these cities’ different and own development paths and influences between each other. This perspective helps us to understand each city’s position in Asian context.

The hypothesis that the Japanese design-build, characterized by such features as its application to high-end and high-risk projects and GC’s employment of in-house architects, is a logical product of the continuous economic growth throughout the latter half of the 20th century has been positively proved by using ‘risk’ and ‘rent’. The integral nature of the resulting ‘architecture’ represents its competence high-lighted as concurrency in design and production, partnering and production design. It should be noted that the end of the growth, however, have deprived the building industry of the opportunity of capability building. Also, the analyses have revealed that the future evolution of the Japanese design-build will never accord with the global preference of today for ‘hybrid’ design-build procurement methods such as bridging design-build and novated design-build.

This study aimed to consider about the method that can grasp condition of houses and housing demands on the level of local administrative division, which was hard to understand through present system of government statistics. Through the various experiment to combine condition of houses and housing demands, focus on population dynamics, we could make some typology of area divide by pattern of DID population dynamics. Depends on this areal typology, we have analyzed various spec of housing stock. As result, we suggested method to grasp the various spec of housing, especially vacancy rate of houses and expiry life-time of housing stocks. And also, we made field study on each areal typology, and considered about direction of future policy on the care for housing stocks.

A system-dynamics model using statistical data has been developed to analyze the relation between ongoing demographic change and indexes representing housing and housing activities. In regard to depopulating regions, the findings include such facts as a) new house building will decrease drastically, b) vacant house ratio will rise to higher level, eventually leading to the fact that c) average life of houses will be extended paradoxically, d) miss-matching of housing demand and supply between regions will further be accelerated and e) maintaining housing stock will be fatally difficult due to the declining local housing industry.

This study aims to consider the impact of past housing provision by Bombay Improvement Trust, and its status on today. We have finished field survey to all remains of BIT housing (BIT Chawls) and historical administrative reports. As result of study, we could achieve to make clear characteristics of building composition. On the comparative study of early public housing development in Asia, we can find influence of planning of BIT in the historical documents or present remains, as Kolkata and Hong Kong.

This study defined "Qualitative Demands", as a new term of demands on physical property of design, to make clear one of the aspect of architectural planning system, with matrix method defined with two axis, principle and architectural level. We can find typical methods to solve "Qualitative Demands" are focused on detour way such as control of sense or concealment of elements. Finally, we can make clear a typology of methods that could realize "Qualitative Demands" on architectural planning.

Many kinds of components, materials and building systems are changing according to the alteration of building systems due to various reasons. However, the changes of ordinary components are rarely recorded in detail. In this study, we grasped the outline of historical development of heat insulating materials. Our study consist two main investigations, document research and hearing to developer, builder, and user. The results has arranged in matrix by 3 axis, product, building system, and time scale. Abstract of historical development in Heat-Insulating materials as below: Fiber Heat-Insulating materials: Started from development of Glass wool or Rock wool as instance of asbestos, and add various examinations on its building system as product for residential house. Today, it is focused on environmental sustainability by adopt various nature materials. Foamed Heat-Insulating materials: Started from Synthetic-Resin, and adopt to house building by examination on flame-retardant. Today, it is focused on environmental sustainability, same as Fiber Heat-Insulating materials, tends to develop of non-CFC products. We grasped historical development of building system based on evolution of building material and product on particular architectural element, mainly in building system of the floor. And also, our investigation was spread on auxiliary Heat-Insulating Material, as Wood-Cement Board, and also on multiple-material Heat-Insulating Materials. Finally, we make clear the totally aspect of historical development. The overlapped feature on historical development of various Heat-Insulating Materials can be explain that had developed diversity till 1970s, however, it was reduced in lately by rise of demands on performance, or regards for environmental sustainability.
