This paper describes the aim and outline of an English language learning support system called "HELP!" or the Harmonized English Learning Program. The project was launched by Osaka University's Center for International Education and Exchange, with the support of the British Council and the Eiken Foundation of Japan. The project aims to help local students achieve higher scores on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) to make them eligible for exchange programs that offer a semester or a full year of study abroad. Each year, more than 100 Osaka University students participate in exchange programs at overseas partner universities; however, many more students struggle to achieve the IELTS score of 6.0 required for eligibility to the programs. Project HELP! will assist those who have already studied on their own but need additional support to succeed. In addition, the project will also contribute toward accelerating the campus' globalization; it will encourage interaction between international students and Japanese students by pairing them as mentors and mentees. The mentors will first complete an intensive two-day course on the IELTS, so that they are well prepared to teach their mentees. After every mentoring session, the mentees wil leave notes on a web-based mentoring support system called "MEnTOR" to indicate their progress in learning. This record will also be shared with their mentors.

The main research objective throughout this book is to reveal the features of the underlying processes through which we convey evaluation by means of metaphorical linguistic expressions. For this purpose, this book studies metaphorical evaluation from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, drawing on conceptual metaphor theory. Another aim of this book is to suggest that such a cognitive study of metaphorical evaluation can contribute to the literature on translation studies.Although metaphorical expressions has always been a popular subject in translation studies, most of the research in this field has been concerned with how translators can overcome the difficulty of translating metaphorical expressions. This book focuses on how translators' intentions in translating a text can affect their translation of metaphorical expressions, particularly those used to convey a writer's evaluation.

The purpose of this study was to construct a parallel corpus between Japanese and English that can be widely used by researchers of Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) in order to promote TIS in Japan. Although large-scale monolingual corpora of translated outputs as well as English corpora for foreign language learners already exist in Japan, interpreting corpora based on authentic data have been almost non-existent. In particular, there was no corpus utilizing natural speech based on performances by professional interpreters in real-life settings. Therefore, we constructed and publicly released a large-scale, dynamic corpus by combining video, audio, and textual information obtained from video recordings of interpreter-mediated press conferences held at the Japan National Press Club (JNPC).

The final goal of the research is to promote the higher education further in the world. To achieve this target, this four-year project focused on enhancing the international student mobility. All the five items shown below were examined, and sufficient results have been obtained at each stage as described in this report:
    1. Systematization of supporting strategies for stakeholders; 2. Arranging and integration of the supporting item groups; 3. Design and production of the supporting software system for the item groups; 4. Feasibility and verification tests of the produced system; 5. Publication of the research results via academic/conference papers.
