Academic biography discussing the correlation between haikai and painting in the life of Sakai Hoitsu. First, it reviews the conventional wisdom and examines it in chronological order and in the context of the works. However, what makes this book different and new is that it attempts to approach it from the perspective of haikai. There are many books on the correlation between literature and painting, but few books on literature written with a mastery of art history in Japan. The book reports on some new material on his masterpiece, the Summer and Autumn Grass Screen (Tokyo National Museum collection), and discusses how he used haikai techniques. Also of special note is a critique of all of his difficult haiku that appear in the text. It also includes a chronological table showing the changes in his signature and the seals he used.
