type:Departmental Bulletin Paper [Abstract] The vaccines for COVID-19 have been developed, and vaccination in Japan began on February 17, 2021, starting with doctors and nurses, followed by those aged 65 years and older on April 12, and those aged 18 to 64 years on June 17. In this study, an online survey (CAWI) was conducted in late November 2021 for people aged 15 (excluding junior high school students) to 74. The questions included the month in which they got their first vaccination and how many of their family members, relatives, colleagues, and friends/acquaintances had already been vaccinated at the time of the shot. The data analysis of non-medical/nursing personnel under 64 years of age showed that the higher the rate of vaccinated people in the workplace or that of vaccinated friends/acquaintances, the later the timing of vaccination. I.e., peer pressure occurred in such a way to avoid taking a shot; the more people around the person got vaccinated, the later in the timing of vaccination the focal person was.

type:Departmental Bulletin Paper [Abstract]The pandemic of the new coronavirus COVID-19 caused waves of infection in Japan, and in each wave, people were asked to refrain from going out and having interpersonal contacts. This paper examined what suppressed (or promoted) going out and interpersonal contact during the pandemic. The data were collected by internet survey in mid-November 2020 and recorded the situations from the first emergency declaration in April to the early stage of the third wave in November. Factors to examine were the engagement in a specific occupation, the contact possibility such as the commuting time and the personal network size, and the psychological factors such as the cultural self-concept. As a result, among the specific occupations, welfare and nursing care workers had high levels of going out and interpersonal contact during the first declaration of emergency, but the level had decreased gradually. Contrary, in the early stage of the third wave, those who worked in a restaurant without close contact with customers went out and had interpersonal contact more often. Concerning the possibility of contact, during the declaration of the first state of emergency, those who commuted by public transportation tended to go out slightly more often, and who had many friends and acquaintances tended to reduce going out. Among the psychological scales, “harmony seeking”, a subscale of the cultural self-concept scale, suppressed both going out and interpersonal contact during the declaration of the first emergency; however, the effect gradually decreased as time proceeded. “Self-expression”, another subscale, consistently suppressed both going out and interpersonal contact. Contrary, “distinctiveness of the self”, another subscale, promoted both going out and interpersonal contact in the third wave. The factors’ interpretations and longitudinal changes were discussed, and a comprehensive discussion was given in the last section.

type:Departmental Bulletin Paper [Abstract]This paper examined the following hypothesis such that when the father’s social status is higher than the child’s, the child evaluates his/her social position higher than his/her own; however, if the gap is too large, the child lowers his/her evaluation. Using SSM 2015 data, fractional polynomial regression analysis was conducted. The results supported the hypothesis. Therefore, if the child is able to utilize more economic affluence, social capital, and/or cultural capital of the father, he/she may enjoy the benefits and regards his/her social status higher. However, if the gap between the father and the child is too large, the child feels embarrassed and lowers his/her evaluation of social status.

It has repeatedly been examined that occupational evaluations are stable over time and various viewpoints. However, it does not mean that the evaluation will not change at all. This paper examined whether occupational evaluations were changed by the existence of a person who engaged in the particular occupation among the respondents’ family, relatives, friends, or acquaintances. We can think of some mechanisms for the evaluation change. First, we receive some support from a person who engaged in the focal occupation, and give a higher evaluation to the occupation in return. We call this mechanism the “support effect.” Second, we may give a higher evaluation to our own occupation than others do, and this results that we give a higher evaluation to others’ occupation of the same kind. We call this mechanism the “self-enhancement effect.” Third, as we get to know more about the compensation of the focal occupation, we may give a higher evaluation to the occupation. We call the mechanism the “knowledge effect.” Exploratory analyses were conducted to examine which mechanism applies to each occupation. We could find out only a few occupations whose evaluation got higher when we had a person in the focal occupation in our family / relatives / friends / acquaintances; and among those occupations, the support effect was seen in about a half of them. In addition, among those occupations in which knowing someone engaged in them did not make a difference in evaluations, some of them showed support effect.

In order to revitalize depopulated areas, rural development using local natural resources is important. This case study examined the role of human network in rural development using social network analysis, focusing on Kuzumaki Town in Iwate Prefecture. The present and former town mayors were located displaying their leadership at the center of their respective networks when they are or were in office. The core network consisted of the town mayor, vice-town mayor, leaders in joint public-private ventures and forest association in the town. The highly cohesive network between these local leaders across sectional barriers supported the town mayors' leadership. In addition, the dense network has remained stable across the two periods, forming bonding social capital. On the other hand, actors in the core network had a lot of ties with actors not only inside but also outside the town, functioning as bridging social capital to obtain diverse resources from outside the town.

We conducted a questionnaire research targeted to junior high school students who were under the developing process toward adulthood to ask their recognitions and evaluations of various human relations. A set of triad tests and a correspondence analysis were used to measure the recognitions of the nine categories of human relations, and scales were used to measure the evaluations in terms of "closeness" and "trust" of the categories. We found the following. 1) The "first dimension" of the correspondence analysis had strong correlation with the evaluations of "closeness" and "trust," which indicates the importance of the dimension. 2) "General trust" had strong correlations with the "first dimension," "closeness," and "trust," of "friends," "classmates," and those in the same "junior high school." Those results suggest that general trust of junior high school students is constructed through the process of so-called the "reduction approach."

In this study, we examined crime control in local communities through interpretations mainly from social capital. Using data obtained from a mail survey in an urban area, we investigated the effects of cooperative behaviors promoted by individual-level or macro-level social capital in neighborhoods on the number of respondents' crime victimizations. The results show that the network size of cooperative acquaintances at the individual level promotes the number of respondents' cooperative behaviors. Moreover, having a neighborhood where greeting and standing talking are frequent promotes respondents' cooperative behaviors. It is also suggested that cooperative behaviors aggregated at the macro level have an inhibitory effect on the number of victimizations in terms of "burglaries of the communities."

In this study, we focused on the effect of the information of others' memories and of the delay of recognition on conformable eyewitness memories to others. A2 (delay: no delay vs. one week) ×2 (experimental group vs. control group) experimental design was employed (both factors were between-subjects variables), and experiments were carried out by four participants per session (a total of 85 participants). First, in a recognition task about a video clip, participants in the experimental group were shown "false responses by others." After that, participants undertook a similar recognition task and a Remember/Know judgment task about these items. As a result, the participants that took the task after one week showed a higher conformity response rate to the false responses others' than participants that took the task immediately after encoding. Moreover, the participants in the experimental group showed a higher Remember-judgment rate in wrong answers than participants in the control group. These results suggest that even though testimony taken from an eyewitness group may be concrete and clear, it is possible that it does not reflect his/her true experience exactly.

The purpose of this study is to examine the validity and possible measurement bias of the number of acquaintances registered on the "address book" of cellular phones (address book size) as the index of the size of personal network using national survey data. The first objective is to reveal who uses address book and results showed that 1) only 60 percent of respondents uses address book, 2) the utilization rate is higher when the respondents are younger, highly educated, having high income, or living in urban areas. Respondents' age and income has stronger impact on the utilization than the other factors. The second objective is to examine the external validity of address book size as the index of the size of personal network. Result shows that the estimate of telephone book method positively correlates with address book size. The correlations are stronger when the respondents are living in urban areas. Respondents' age does not moderate the correlation.

How often does it happen for those who meet for the first time to have an acquaintance in common? To solve this problem, we need to know the population of the society, the acquaintanceship volume, and the degree of overwraps among the acquaintances. Those problems are altogether called 'the small world problems.' Watts et al. (Watts and Strogatz 1998; Watts 1999) built a simulation, in which they varied the randomness of the network from regular to random, and observed when the small world phenomenon occurred. This simulation is applicable to a wide range of problems. In this paper, the finding in the anonymous one-shot PD game in small groups - the more transitivity in trust relation, the more cooperation - is applied to the macro or society level by using Watts' et al.'s simulation. We find that (I) as the size of the group or society increases, (2) as the number of trustee decreases, or (3) as the randomness of the trust networks increases, then the transitivity declines, which means that in such a case the cooperation ratio declines or the maintenance of social order becomes difficult. Based on this finding and the difference of the acquaintanceship volumes in Japan and US, we discuss the kinds of network structure developed in Japan and US to maintain the social order.

Friedkin and Johnsen's interpersonal influence model (Friedkin, 1999; Friedkin and Johnsen, 1999) does not specify the mechanism of social influence, how they affect each other. I introduce some social psychological theories and bring those into Friedkin's model so that the emergence of social influence through the social psychological process is clearly described. At the same time, the possibility of reactance against the persuasion is introduced. Reactance plays a role for the people in the group to have similar but not identical attitudes.

Social network analysis in Japan is biased toward personal network research. More attention should be paid to structurally oriented researches. Social Network Analysis by Wasserman and Faust is a great textbook for learning structural analysis. However, this textbook is not totally exhaustive, and there have been further developments in social network analysis since this textbook was published. By looking over those aspects, I attempt to clarify the position of the book within social network analysis.

Three aspects must be concerned when we deal with structuring of groups. One is the kind of relations (e.g., friendship, trust); another is the form of structure (e.g., symmetry, transitivity) and their measures; and the last is the discrepancy between the values of the measures from the values in random states. In this article, we deal with trust relation inside the groups, and investigate their density, symmetry, and transitivity. Then, we compare structural variables with variables from an anonymous one-shot prisoner's dilemma game, One of our findings shows that as the transitivity of trust relation in groups becomes higher, the subjects' cooperation ratio also becomes higher. However, higher transitivity does not help the subjects improve the accuracy of their predictions about the other subjects' behaviors (either to cooperate or defect). This suggests that people rely on the structure of the group but not on each person's trustworthiness.

Axelrod's The Evolution of Cooperation (1984) asserts, both from results of computer tournaments he organized and from a mathematical analysis of a model he constructed, that Tit-for-Tat is a powerful strategy. However, the conceptual scheme on the basis of which he computed the expected value has some theoretical flaws. The present paper attempts to re-formulate his conceptual scheme by the introduction of the notion of 'inbreeding bias' which is now nicely treated in literature of social networks, and by dropping the idea of 'discount parameter' which we see does not fit into the problems of collective stability of a certain strategy. We find that Tit-for-Tat remains somewhat strong under our re-formulation, but is so only under some restricted conditions.

The aims of this research project are to update occupational prestige scores and to construct a new scale of social status by using data of the 2016 Social Status Survey. The main findings are as follows: (1) There are considerably high correlations in the occupational hierarchy by subsamples, (2) The robustness and reliability of the occupational prestige scores are reinforced, (3) Some occupational prestige scores with gender, employment status or company size were different from original occupational prestige scores. The construction of new scale (multi-dimensional social status scale) for prestige and socioeconomic status is urgent matter.

This project investigates how people proceed from love to marriage to child bearing by collecting quantitative data. It is supposed to clarify inequalities in family formation. For this purpose, we hypothesize that strong networks will accelerate family formation processes. In the first year, we conducted a pilot survey "2013 National Survey on Family Formation and Career Formation in Japan" with 4,993 respondents (aged from 20 to 69). In the second year, "2014 Pretest on Family Formation and Career Formation in Japan" was conducted with 204 respondents. In the final third year, we collected data in "2015 National Survey on Family Formation and Career Formation in Japan" with 12,007 respondents.

The association between cultural capital and social capital were examined by means of two social surveys in a classical music festival. Besides, the attitude of art for arts' sake, and the social identity and mental health, of the audience were examined. Mainly, two social survey was conducted. One is the survey for general audience in "Saito Kinen Festival, Matsumoto (SKF)" and the other is the survey for junior high school students who attended the student program of SKF. The latter enabled us to examine the association described at the beginning in the middle of developmental process. As a result, we found the strong association between the initial contact to classical music and the preference in classical music, and the strong association between the initial contact and the participation and evaluation of their community.

This study examined the role of social network for establishing an environmentally-sound industry and area, focusing on Kuzumaki Town in Iwate as a case. As a result, a dense networks between the present town mayor, leaders in joint public-private ventures and forest association in the town existed. In addition, a dense network around the former town mayor was found in the period when the former town mayor was in his position. We concluded that a highly centralized network with successive town mayor has been sustained a bonding network existed between the leaders of joint public-private ventures and forest association, which contributed to the development in Kuzumaki Town.

We examined the effects of economy and policy of local government which create disparity among regions, upon disparity among individuals. In the main survey, we examined the effects by looking atthe relation between the cities’/villages’ health policy and the difference of health among individuals. As a result, participation in hobby and entertainment activities encourages people to take health services. Participation in local regional activities also encourages them to do so, but the effect is larger in cities/villages with weaker financial capability.

In this research project, we extended the idea of selective interaction of Orbel & Dawes (1991), and examined whether cooperative action can gain higher profit than non-cooperative action by selective movement between groups. First, we examined this by mathematical model and computer simulation. It showed that when the share of cooperative type is large enough, selective movement and cooperative strategy can gain higher profit than other strategies. Next, we conducted social dilemma experiments in which subjects can change their group. The results of the experiments show that cooperative players tend to escape from non-cooperative players and non-cooperative players have a tendency that they do not move while there are some cooperators in their group but they begin to move when there are no cooperators. This result shows that cooperative players have more tendency for selective movement than non-cooperative players. In order to compare the results of laboratory experiments with date of actual society, we carried out a social research about job change. In this result, correlation between cooperative tendency and job change action or a job change intention was observed. It is conformable with the experimental result As for methodology, evolutionary game theory and multi-agent models are thought to be important for micro-macro analysis in sociology. But our methodological analysis showed that N person prisoner's dilemma game, which we mainly examined this time, was too narrow as formulization of social dilemma, so it is better to define a cooperation situation as large game classes including N person chicken game. Research of selective movement in such general cooperative situation of is a future subject.
